My geraniums are still putting forth a bit of lovely into these cold Winter days. I thought they would feel crunchy by now, but the petals are still soft to the touch and pliable. I consider them a bit offbeat in that something that is progressing towards death changes and yet still remains full of beauty at every stage along the way. I suppose it all in the perspective of the mind. I choose to see its beauty rather than resent the impending future.

I made a new digital scrapbooking tutorial! I am trying to come out of retirement. It's a self-push thing though. I'm doing challenges with Rachel Jefferies and Lynn Grieveson. I’ll be doing a Substack post, but for now: Tutorial: youtu.be/StMADvhWP3k

I learned something today. I gained a better understanding regarding the French toast trend on Winter-warning weather days. I am a life-long Missourian and have never heard of it before, but yet it makes total sense! I understand it's "a thing" in other states too. The first settlers of Missouri were the French who married the Illinois Indians (I have at least 3 pairs in my ancestry). That makes French toast fitting, right? Although I have a vague memory that French toast is not really French toast! Couple that theory with the fact that people go crazy wild empting the grocery stores of --- what? Bread, milk, and eggs, right?!! And you begin to wonder why they buy these things instead of icemelt or a favorite Winter hot toddy to keep one warm. I mean, really. Really, really. When the cold snap passes, what do these people do with the overbought, extra, beyond-the-normal-grocery-shopping-day bread, milk, and eggs? Well, these are the three ingredients required to make French toast! Bingo! Let's use up our perceived needs and make French toast! Let's just call them Unused-Perceived-Needed-Ingredient French toast and enjoy it! So guess what I had to do today? There is that power of suggestion always at work. I made some delicious French toast with ingredients bought 3 weeks ago on a regular shopping day and thoroughly enjoyed them. In fact, I enjoyed making them SO much that I made a powdered sugar smiley face on them and stacked them up like a snowman because, hey, if we can only have ice and no snow, I'll bring an upsidedown snowman into my life when I want too! And gobble him down. I am that kid at heart you know.

I wanted to head out today to take some fabulous photoshots, but the boys worked today and I did not sleep for worry of traveling on ice, and was ready to go at 4:30 a.m. for the long drive in freezing rain. So I snapped a photo through the window of the bird feeder's icicles instead. The feeder was frozen and empty, so we tossed some bird seed on the ground. Every now and again the drops would start dripping when the temps rose to just above freezing, and then they would harden up again. It got me pondering, and the text on the photo is where my brain went to. I think one of my goals for 2025 is to get back into sharing photos and writings on social media. I have allowed myself the grace to back out of it should it not feel right. Or should I be more firm with my goal?

One really special moment in the truck while heading down a country road in Pike County, Missouri, was when to the left of us the sunshine showed up and to the right of us dark rainclouds. I kept turning my head from right to left and back again. Wow! The two were colliding in front of us! It was truly an amazing scene which I am sure the video camera did not capture as our eyes saw it. We continued on and the road turned so that the sun was behind us and the rain was in front of us and it was even more magical! I had to stop in the road and soak in the moment! Wow! I stopped where the tree added to the framing of my video composure. It's the photographer in me that makes me do it. There were a few raindrops on the windshield, but it never did really rain. It was so wild how the bright sun was where we sat and on the road underneath the truck wheels and us, and then the sky was dark and ominious. What a contrast! I felt as if the sunshine was a spotlight on us while the drama of the world was passing us by. Then we drove to the end of the road and saw a rainbow! How sweet was that! Sometimes you just have to wait for the moments to show up, just like that! Just get out and go, and wait for it. GLIMMERS of JOY will present themself if you just let them. These micro-moments will last in your memory far longer than any you try to create for yourself. Stop trying so hard and just get out there and be. December 30, 2024

I love remembering about the trumpter swans and how they flew in twos and threes and then landed in quick succession with what became a familiar rhthem of “splash, splash” or “splash, splash, splash.” They never landed in unision, but in succession. And yet ironically in my mind, their succession of movement was also distinctly unified.
