Howdy!đď¸ I'm turning 320 acres of Texas desert wasteland into a desert forest in the MOST isolated spot in Texas!
My name is Shaun! I live in Texas and I run my own business integrating software systems. And now I'm buying 320 acres of West Texas wasteland?!?
You might ask, âWhy buy this land?â I want a challenge.
One of the first properties that came up matched absolutely everything I was looking for.
-,The land is almost completely barren.
-,Monsoon rains bring water at the height of summer, when itâs most needed.
- Itâs under $250 an acre
- A wash in the middle looks like it has potential to capture massive amounts of water
I don't know if this project will work out for me or not, but one thing is for sure: it will be interesting.

I'm humbled by all the support for the water well t-shirts. I placed the announcement at the end of the episode and y'all have exceeded my hopes.

If you missed the announcement, I'm offering limited edition t-shirts through January 11. 100% of the funds received will go towards digging a water well this spring.
The budget for digging and sealing the well is up to $40,000, which is a very scary number. Every t-shirt puts a dent in the number.
I say a thank you every time I see a sale notification come through. The generosity is sincerely appreciated.

The northern lights made it to Dustups. The blue light is the rescue beacon that everyone always asks about.

I took a risk this week and featured a project that isnât Dustups. Itâs either going to be a bangerâor totally bomb.
If you want to see more stories like this, the best thing you can do is share this episode with someone whoâll actually enjoy it. Hypes and comments are great, but nothing helps more than sending the link directly to someone who loves these kinds of stories.

We found day-old bobcat tracks last night on the south dam. I'm excited to see the wildlife presence growing stronger.
The wildlife gets a lot more intense in Saturday's upcoming episode. I'm excited for this one.

Rats keep chomping on my tree starts. Do you have any suggestions?
The method that's working for us is:
1) Place 11" (280 mm) pots in a 27 gallon totes. Add 1" (25 mm) of water at the bottom. Seal with a lid to trap humidity.
2) After germination, remove the lid. Keep adding water to the bottom of the tote, watering tree roots from below.
The problem is the photo where my finger points to a sweet acacia that a kangaroo rat chomped in half.
I'm not married to this system. The 27 gallon totes can't be lifted because they can't support the weight. Is there a different system that commerical nurseries use?
My ideal outcome would be a clear lid for the totes, but clear lids cost more than the totes. How can I secure the tote against rats without buying clear lids?

We're racing to wrap up the mega swale. 1,200' long and 30' wide. There's a reasonable chance that Tropical Storm Lorena may blow through here on Sunday. We want as much of that water as possible!!!

I found a desert hackberry setting fruit in the canyon. I started eating the fruits for the seeds. I continued eating the fruits because they're delicious. They taste like persimmons.
What a beautiful tree!

Denton, Texas, has a precarious water supply. As soon as rain flows into its two surrounding lakes, the water belongs to Dallas and NOT Denton. How is it possible for a city of 150,000 people to be surrounded by clean water and not have a stable drinking supply?

As you read this, you probably noticed that this is not a normal Dustups topic. I'm using Dustups to launch a new channel âŞ@texaswatersecurity⏠. Water is an overwhelming interest for my audience and if you know anything about Texas water laws, it's incredibly convoluted... And fascinating.
If you enjoy my content and you like the idea of learning about water in Texas, then please give my episode about Denton's water dilemma a watch.

Most of the comments in today's episode https://youtu.be/E6lhvgipfUw are asking about this week's heavy rain. The floods in Central Texas have not affected Dustups, at least not physically. I believe everyone in Texas is horrified at the loss of life, particularly the young girls' camp that the river swept away.
Our knee jerk reaction will likely be major flood control projects. Bigger dams. More centralized coordination.
I believe we should do the exact opposite.
The Hill Country is vulnerable to floods because it is dominated by slopes that reject water. If more landowners in the *tributary* watersheds added swales, BDAs, check dams and other water harvesting features, it would relieve pressure on the major rivers like the Guadalupe during severe floods.
If you're a Central Texas landowner that wants to reduce the chances of future flood disasters, the best thing you can do is help your property absorb and infiltrate as much rain as quickly as possible. Doing so dramatically improves your own drought resilience while taking pressure off of your neighbors and fellow Texans during the worst floods.
