If procrastination were treated by a Chief Marketing Officer, your only real problem would be not enough resources.



Procrastination is the first symptom of a poorly designed system. And exactly the same way it works in business.


When a company has no clear positioning, no funnel, and no priorities, it’s always “busy surviving.” When a person has no clarity on why they’re doing a task, what result it leads to, and where it’s going, they’re just busy performing productivity instead of creating results.


As a marketer, I see the same psychological mechanisms every time:


1. Reduce cognitive load
In marketing we never dump everything on the customer at once: meanings, offers, benefits, calls to action. We guide them step by step: here’s a funny video → here’s why we’re smart → here’s what you’ll get → here’s an easy first step.

You need to treat yourself the same way: one clear next step does. Most procrastination happens for one simple reason: you don’t actually know what to do next.


2. Honest exchange: effort → reward

If a customer doesn’t understand what they’ll get, they won’t even like the post. Enjoyed the video → liked it. Felt personally attacked → left a hate comment. Saw how the product improves life → made a purchase.

The same rule applies to you. If you don’t understand what completing a task gives you here and now, not in some abstract future, you’ll keep postponing it, blaming yourself, and eventually burning out.

Productivity starts with a very basic question: “What do I get in return?”


3. Fast reinforcement beats big promises

In marketing, we use micro-rewards: joined the webinar — get a bonus, stayed until the end — get another one.

Personal productivity works the same way. Big goals without fast dopamine anchors simply don’t stick, but small celebrations restore energy.

4. Association with safety

If a brand is associated with negativity, people cancel it. No explanations needed. If your work is constantly framed as “you must,” “you should,” “ASAP,” burnout is inevitable.

Praise yourself and your team more often. Say out loud that the work matters and that people matter. Energy lives where there’s a sense of importance and safety.


5. Systems instead of heroism
Marketing is not creativity, it's systems. And productivity works the same way.

When there’s structure, your brain doesn’t have to reinvent your workday every morning. You just show up and execute.


That’s why at my productivity and energy-recovery sessions I always say: we don’t “fight” procrastination but we remove the reasons why it appears in the first place.

And yes, these principles work equally well for burned-out people and burned-out businesses.
