Inside Archaeology

Yesterday this channel hit the 100K subscribers mark. Wow, you guys, this was my goal for the END of 2026, to hit it 3 months early is amazing! I think it's rather fitting that next week I will be going on my first dig in a wee while with ‪@Digventures‬ , a social enterprise organising crowdfunded archaeological excavation experiences. I'm going to be filming my time there digging and (weather and site depending) potentially filming my August discoveries video IN THE FIELD, how cool will that be? When I'm back I'll set up a 100K celebration stream so keep your eyes peeled for that. What kind of field content you would be interested in: a vlog? Interviews? Timelapses? Trowel shots? Let me know your ideas in the comments. Bonus pic of me as a baby archaeologist on a mock dig at undergrad unaware of where this career would take me!

The SEA of Odyssey content on YT got me thinking about Homer's Ithaca and after some digging I came across 3 main theories about where it might be: modern Ithaca, Kefalonia, or Homer's imagination. Watch my latest video tomorrow to learn about all 3 hypotheses and see what the archaeological and historical evidence does or does support. Featuring a guest appearance by Greek archaeology expert ‪@FlintDibble‬ who has actually read the Odyssey in the original Greek (unlike me).

Inside Archaeology

Princess Ita of Egypt was the daughter of King Amenemhat II of the 12th Dynasty. 3800 years ago, she died between the ages of 20 and 34 and was buried in the pyramid complex of her father in a decorated wooden coffin. Long religious texts including her name were written on it and inside with her body were a set of precious personal adornments, royal insignia and weapons, including this richly adorned bronze dagger. Recent re-examination of her bones has found several musculoskeletal stress markers that may signal that she spent a lot of time gripping something tightly, like her dagger. Together with similar results from the skeletons of her 4 other female relatives, this has led researchers to think that Middle Kingdom princesses were potentially trained in the arts of war or hunting. Dashboard tells me that the channel is now officially 10 years old! It's come a long way from using a camcorder propped up on my window ledge and Windows moviemaker to make videos on how to be an archaeologist. Way back before Youtube I spent 3 summers digging in the Kingdom of Jordan. Each season would end with a trip down to visit Petra (and yes we did all sing the Indiana Jones song as we came to the Treasury)! My profile and banner photo come from my trip there in 2011. A while back (about 70K subscribers ago) I made a video about Petra, a little site tour so to speak, with lots of archaeological info, debunking folklore, and tips on how to plan your own trip there.
