Tensions boiled over in Kenya on Wednesday as mass protests erupted across the country, marking one year since a controversial tax bill sparked violent demonstrations. At least eight people lost their lives, and hundreds more were injured as thousands poured into the streets to voice growing frustration with President William Ruto’s administration.
Civil society groups reported over 400 injuries, including more than 80 in critical condition, as demonstrators clashed with police in multiple regions. In the capital Nairobi, security forces responded with tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and in some instances, live ammunition.
Protesters waved Kenyan flags, held roses, and carried photos of those killed in last year’s unrest, calling for justice and political accountability. The chant "Ruto must go!" echoed throughout central Nairobi, as heavily armed police barricaded roads and blocked access to Parliament with barbed wire.
