I just watched the pilot to Knights of Guinevere and I LOVED IT!
It features great characters that feel flawed yet endearing, and beautiful, flowing animation. While the exposition was a bit thick, after the 2:00 mark, you are left with some of the strongest modern visual storytelling. Sympathetic characters are tricky to write because you want their struggles to feel natural, especially in a world beyond ours. Yet they nailed it. Due to the limited cast, it is easy to spend time developing central characters, and the voice acting does a great job at selling these personalities. Even the villain is surprisingly layered with a very human desire despite the cruelty of their actions. It is a great characterization of evil without endorsement.
The class struggle is felt on the nose, but that's fine because it is portrayed through likable leads who are as ambitious as they are hardworking. This pilot's greatest strength lies in its subtle visual worldbuilding. The visuals aren't just eye candy; they actively reward you for paying attention. We understand who the villain is, the heroes, their motivations, and why each character acts the way they do. Even the background reveals how the cyberpunk setting fuels the need for survival. The violence of their world drives the attitude of each class system. After a cliffhanger like that, I can't wait for episode 2.
You can watch it for free on YouTube, and if Cyberpunk is your thing, I highly reccomend giving Knights of Guinevere a watch.
Ok. I understand the appeal of trying new technology but can we please stop modifying old films? The Wizard of Oz's practical visuals give it a distinct visual style and it's annoying to see people try to "improve" it rather than accept the visual effects of its era. Especially because it's false advertising. If you're promising to release The Wizard of Oz from 1939 you can't lie about the 2025 tinkering to that movie. This isn't like 4K restoration because it's not using modern technology to restore what was created at that time.
Rest in Peace to Johnathan Joss. He was best known for playing John Redcorn in King of the Hill and Chief Ken Hotate in Parks and Recreation. You might also know him in Tulsa King as Bad Face. Regardless, he will be dearly missed.
I have two videos planned covering a The Last of Us season 1 review and analysis of The Whale to release in late July. Likewise, I have started writing a script for a new short film.
If anyone loves sci fi or fantasy, I highly reccomend Andor (Season 1). It is a thoughtful epic about the cruelty of war while also serving as a unique character study. While the first three episodes are a bit slow, the payoff is worth every second of screentime. It takes a character I barely remembered from Rogue One and turned him into a personal favorite. If you're fishing for good televison I have good news! This show casts a wide net, especially with the timeless dialogue. Whether you love Star Wars or have never heard of it, this is a show made for people who love mature storytelling.
