The Gymnastics Experience
Myth 001: Coaches train their athletes.
I used to think I could come up with a training plan, structure drills, sets, reps, load management, etc etc.
I tried Periodization.
I tried TriPhasic Undulating Periodization.
I tried sport specific conditioning.
I tried general movement conditioning.
And I didn’t understand why winning was so elusive.
Looking back I see my flaws, my ego, my arrogance, my inexperience, my naivety.
It wasn’t until I was at a Regional Championship in Arizona that I saw what looked like a 10 year old girl doing back handspring layout step out on a high beam that is clicked..
I went to the camps, the clinics, the gyms and I heard industry leaders speak and share. Everything I heard clicked when I saw this gymnast on a high beam.
My ah-ha moment was this:
There is only one level in gymnastics, level 10, and everything the athlete does should be executed with the same effort as if a level 10 was performing.
Walk like a level 10
Jump like a level 10
Kick like a level 10
Do the easy stuff incredibly well because it’s easy.
I realized that my athletes reach the level of effort they are willing to put it.
And far too often my athletes were putting in level 5 energy and wanting to achieve level 8 gymnastics.
I soon realized that “what” the gymnast does is not as important as the “how” they do it.
I soon learned that many drills and progressions are not even required because as long as the effort applied is level 10 energy they will get better no matter what.
This revealed to me a much more direct approach.
This is where I came up with the 90% rule. The athlete always must train at or above 90% of their max effort. Anything less is simply a waste of time.
I once was that coach who put in 150% only to have athletes giving 65%.
My problem wasn’t what I was doing directly, it was what I was allowing them to do. I allowed a culture of effort that operated below the expectation.
