Every year, the Bengalis wake up at 4 am specifically to listen to a chant. This chant has been performed by a specific man past 50-60 years. Although now he is no more, his recorded voice carries on his legacy. This sense of nostalgia has been carried forward through the years and has now become a part of a continued tradition. It is said that when one listens to the chant, their entire day, year and life is blessed. Hence, one eagerly tunes into the radio station at 4 am on Mahalaya
Furthermore, on this day, the idol makers draw the eyes of Durga Maa. This ritual is termed 'Chokkhu Daan'. It signifies the awakening of Maa Durga. This marks the beginning of her journey to her father's place.
