💬 Informal vs. clinical, side by side:
Patient says: “It was nothing, really. I've told my daughter not to make a fuss.”
What's actually being said: “I don't want to worry my daughter, and I don't want to feel less independent.”
Recognising this kind of minimising language, and responding to the feeling behind it rather than the words themselves, is one of the highest-value soft skills in OET Speaking and NMC OSCE geriatric stations.

📝 OET/IELTS Speaking tip from Episode 18:

Weaker: “We need to check your heart.”
Stronger: “We check to rule out the dangerous causes, not because we think that's what this is.”

The difference isn't politeness — it's structure. The second version names the action, names the intent, and lowers the perceived likelihood, all in one breath.

That's OET Speaking's Information Giving indicator, and it's the same skill IELTS Speaking Part 3 rewards when you extend an answer with a reason.
