New Delhi: India continues to send a large number of students overseas for higher education, with more than 13.35 lakh Indians studying abroad in 2024, highlighting the country’s growing dependence on foreign universities despite having the world’s largest college-age population, according to a report released by NITI Aayog on Monday.
Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Germany have emerged as the five most preferred international higher education destinations for Indian students, the report said.
The report said that Canada was the top destination in 2024, with around 4.27 lakh Indian students studying in the country.
he US followed with 3.37 lakh Indian students, while the UK hosted about 1.85 lakh students from India.
Australia and Germany ranked fourth and fifth, with 1.22 lakh and nearly 43,000 Indian students, respectively.
The report also highlighted that India has the largest higher education-age population in the world, with nearly 15.5 crore people in the 18–23 age group.
The report further pointed out that some smaller European countries have a high share of Indian students.

Hyderabad: Sajid Akram, one of the suspects in the recent mass shooting at Bondi beach in Australia, is a native of Hyderabad, the Telangana Police said on Tuesday.
He migrated to Australia 27 years ago and had limited contact with his family in Hyderabad, the Telangana DGP office said in a statement.
The factors that led to radicalisation of Sajid Akram and his son Naveed Akram appear to have no connection with India or any local influence in Telangana, it said.
Sajid Akram completed his B.Com in Hyderabad and migrated to Australia in search of employment in November 1998, it said.

A picture of Makkah taken from space has captured the Kaaba shining like a bright light. It was captured by NASA astronaut Don Pettit.
Pettit recently returned from the International Space Station (ISS) and shared the image on his social media account. “Orbital views of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The bright spot in the center is the Kaaba, Islam’s holiest site, visible even from space,” read the caption of the image.
The astronaut captured the image during his fourth ISS mission from September 2024 to April 2025. The photograph was taken from the cupola window, an observatory module, using a high-resolution Nikon camera.

#Cyber #crime police confirmed that the #woman received a WhatsApp call from a person impersonating Dr. Steve Rodrigues, a urologist at the London hospital.
The caller told her that her son was involved in a serious accident at #London #Airport and had sustained a severe head injury.
Stating that he cannot be admitted #officially without proof of identity, the fraudster claimed he needed money to begin treatment after “illegally” admitting her son.
The #victim transferred money over the course of #two months from August 8 to September 18. She paid a total of Rs 35,23,070 through #online #transactions, for the #alleged #treatment.

Bihar Man Holds Mock Funeral, Says "Wanted To See People's Affection"
A man in Bihar wanted to check who would grieve and how much affection he would get after death, so he staged a fake funeral, lay on a bier and arrived at a crematorium ground. Sounds bizarre, but this actually happened in Konchi village, Guraru block of Gaya district.
Mohan Lal, a 74-year-old former Air Force soldier, left everyone shocked after he organised his own funeral ceremony while still alive. He even asked some people to take him to the crematorium on a decorated bier, following all the rituals. Some emotional songs were also playing in the background.
Word of this incident spread like wildfire, and hundreds of villagers joined the unique procession. When they reached there, Mohan Lal got up, leaving everyone in shock. A symbolic effigy was burned, and a mass feast was also held.
