🇺🇬🇹🇼 Taiwan Warns Citizens About Travel to Uganda Amid Passport Dispute

Taiwan has advised its citizens to reconsider travelling to Uganda following reports of incidents involving Taiwanese travellers and Ugandan immigration officials.

According to Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there have been at least two recent cases in Uganda involving Taiwanese nationals. In one case, a traveller was reportedly deported.

The dispute centres on Uganda's recognition of the “One-China” policy, under which Uganda recognises the People's Republic of China rather than Taiwan as a separate diplomatic state.

Taiwanese travellers have reportedly been asked to present Chinese passports, creating a serious diplomatic and practical problem for people travelling with Taiwanese passports.

Taiwan's authorities say they are seeking clarification from the Ugandan government.

The situation also highlights a much larger geopolitical reality.

🇨🇳 China has been expanding its diplomatic and economic influence across Africa, while encouraging countries that recognise Beijing to limit official relations with Taipei.

For Taiwan, this creates growing challenges for its citizens travelling to countries that maintain diplomatic ties with Beijing.

For Uganda, the issue reflects the delicate balance African countries often face when dealing with major global powers.

🌍 This isn't simply about passports. It's about diplomacy, recognition, China–Taiwan relations and Africa's position in a changing global order.

Slavery was never just chains.

It was iron collars that made sleep almost impossible. It was whips, auctions, family separation, torture, and a system designed to strip human beings of their dignity.

Many enslaved Africans were forced to wear brutal iron collars for weeks or even months. These devices inflicted constant pain and were used to punish people for acts as simple as trying to escape, speaking out, resting too long, or daring to believe they deserved freedom.

This was not merely "hard labor."

It was a system of organized terror built on violence, fear, and the deliberate dehumanization of millions of people.

Perhaps the most unsettling truth is that many who upheld this system considered themselves respectable members of society, businessmen, politicians, and even churchgoers. History reminds us that injustice can become normalized when people stop questioning it.

We must never sanitize slavery with gentle language. To understand the strength of our ancestors, we must first understand the horrors they endured. Freedom was not a gift; it was won through the resilience, resistance, and sacrifice of generations who refused to let oppression define them.

🇨🇩 The Democratic Republic of Congo is taking a major step toward economic empowerment and resource ownership.

The Congolese government is considering a new mining reform that would make mine workers shareholders in the companies they help build. The proposed decree seeks to enforce the 2018 Mining Code's requirement for 10% Congolese ownership in mining companies, with 5% reserved for workers through cooperatives, credit schemes, and other employee ownership programs, while the remaining 5% would be owned by Congolese citizens.

For decades, Africa has supplied the world with valuable minerals while many local communities saw little benefit from the wealth beneath their feet. This reform aims to ensure that Congolese workers and citizens gain a direct stake in the mining sector and share in the profits generated from their country's natural resources.

This is the kind of thinking Africa needs: moving from being workers in foreign-controlled industries to becoming owners, investors, and decision-makers in our own economies.

Many people know Marcus Garvey for his powerful speeches, but few realize the scale of what he and his movement accomplished:

✅ Built schools and educational institutions
✅ Owned a printing press and launched newspapers
✅ Published the Negro World in multiple languages
✅ Purchased ships and promoted international trade through the Black Star Line
✅ Acquired office buildings and Liberty Hall in New York
✅ Built a movement that reportedly reached millions of members worldwide
✅ Expanded into dozens of countries across Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, and beyond
✅ Founded the People's Political Party

Perhaps the most remarkable part is that Garvey achieved all of this without government funding and with only a limited formal education.

His legacy reminds us that real empowerment is not just about protest—it is about building institutions, businesses, schools, media platforms, and economic power.
