Sometimes you need a reminder that this sport is one that’s full of love. That this fight game isn’t like anything else on the planet.
I am often saying the cards that receive the least hype are often the most inspiring. Consider myself inspired by what transpired at UFC Winnipeg.
Let’s talk about it.
Mike Malott demonstrated the possibilities of grace. Gilbert Burns laid down his gloves. Jai Herbet reminded us of what it means to be a veteran of the sport. Charles Jourdain, Melissa Croden, and Jasmine Jasudavicius showed us the realest Canadian hospitality possible.
We had the best desk you could ever ask for. Shoutout to Paul Felder, Laura Sanko, and Brendan Fitzgerald.
Our first fight was a quick bantamweight start between Jamie Siraj and John Yannis with Yannis showing his boxing skills early and scoring a round 1 knockout of Jamie Siraj. That was clean.
PRELIMS
John Castaneda vs. Mark Vologdin was exactly what we expected, an all-out war. Vologdin simply cannot be slept, and Castaneda knows how to turn it up as the fight progressed. This none stop action lead us into draw, which seemed like the perfect end to what felt like an equal effort from both warriors.
JJ Aldrich scored a surprising win against Jamey-Lyn Horth who seemed to be the most accurate and aggressive fighter throughout the bout.
Melissa Croden came back from the adversity she faced in the early rounds of her fight against Darya Dheleznyakova, snagged the decision through her push toward dominance, and took the time to remind us to love our neighbors. Her grit and humanity are hardly matched.
Tanner Boser held on and pushed hard in a heavyweight striker’s battle, but ultimately succumbed to the power of Gokhan Saricam in the second round.
Robert Valentin scored a much-needed submission against Julien Leblanc to spoil the Canadian’s debut. His realness in the aftermath was one of life’s beautiful moments. Robert tapped into the fighting spirit and his humanity touched my soul. His win dedicated to his late mother, with all credit and many thanks given to this gym. He needed that win. He got it. Julien will have his second change.
Our featured prelim bout between Dennis Buzukja and Márcio Barbosa simply did not disappoint and Barbosa extended his R1 finish streak to five. Surely, he is a prospect we must keep our eyes on.
MAIN CARD
We started off with an incredible battle of fruition between between Thiago Moisés and Gauge Young. While Gauge managed to get the win through his scrappy ground response and ultimate damage given, Thiago showed his experience and continued to challenge Gauges resolve until the very last moment.
Jasmine Jasudavicius stayed patient in her bout against Karine Silva, survived a vicious ground offense and defense from Karine, and secured the win. She apologized for not getting the finish and playing it safe, but anyone who watched that fight was on the edge of their seat the entire time.
We got to business early with Mandel Nallo’s debut against established warrior Jai Herbert. It was looking grim early when Mandel’s power rocked Jai several times. However, Jai locked in. He locked in and he responded with his own bombs, sleeping Mandel before we escaped the first round. He needed that. He got it.
Our co-main event was yet another exciting decision war between Kyler Phillips and Charles Jourdain and yet another unneeded Canadian apology. Kyler was extremely dominant but never away from danger in the first half of the fight, but Jourdain really clinched the second half and ultimately scored the win.
Finally, the end of the illustrious career of Gilbert Burns. Mike Malott, with his true striking ability, found incredible success early. Uppercuts are the best punch, and Mike found a home for a few nasty upper cuts. It was the spamming ground and pound that ended it all.
Gilbert, you have done it all. So many incredible wars, and he was gentleman throughout it all. We love you Gilbert!
I really wanted to get a breakdown video out for Murphy vs. Evloev, but preparing for my midterms has been quite challenging! I simply cannot make beautiful slides in time :( </3. I will be watching however.
I cannot believe they are making Lerone and Movsar fight each other rather than giving either of them a shot at the belt. What are we even doing?! Seems like the UFC will do anything to keep these men from a title shot. Did you catch this main event is a battle of the Top Teams? Which side of the pond are you going for?
I am most excited to see MVP against Sammy P! That will be a sure fire hit. Do you agree? MVP is perhaps the most difficult welterweight puzzle of the modern age. And Sam has been on an absolute tear with a 4 fight finish streak!! Watch out!!
Other bouts/fighters I’ve got my eyes on for real:
Nathaniel Wood vs. Losene Kieta - y’all know I’m hype about The Last Kingsman!! He’s durable, he’s game, and he’s coming off a veteran performance against Jose Miguel Delgado. You know he's tough and Kieta's only loss is a foot injury, so this should be good!
Mason Jones vs. Axel Sosa - lil Sosa had a fabulous UFC debut, keeping his momentum flowing after his destructive reign as the 4x AFC champ. He has yet to taste defeat. Mason is also coming in with big momentum after his performance of the night finish over Bolaji Oki and a six fight win streak. Mason reminds me of toothless the dragon, and this makes sense considering he is The Dragon. If you know Toothless, you know he’s basically the most baddie dragon in the How To Train Your Dragon universe.
Lastly, I’m excited for the UFC to be welcoming England's own Shanelle 'The Nightmare' Dyer to the roster! She is not only a Muay Thai powerhouse, but she showed relentless spirit and an unwillingness to give up in her DWCS fight against Carol Foro. She didn’t get the win, but its clear there is a bright future ahead and is most definitely for real.
I'm sorry I wasn't able to put together a video for UFC 326, but here is a dynamic review post for the night.
First, what I perceived to be the highs:
1) Rodolfo Bellato spoiling the party with a finish to start the night.
2) Alberto Montes got real with us about mental health and looked as sturdy as a brick house with his signature anaconda choke finish against Ricky Turcios.
3) Robocop got mechanical on us when he finished Brunno Ferreira with a machine-like right hand to seal the deal in R1.
4) Drew Dober scored his 11th knockout win against fellow veteran Michael Johnson via a left hook in R2 and kept it classy as usual in the post fight. Much love!
5) Honoring Women's History Month!! We witnessed the first ever fight in a women's division be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. Shout out to our legends Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Weili Zhang, who put on one of the most incredible bouts in combat sports history.
And naturally, the lows:
1) Donte Johnson and Cody Brundage both individually looked off in very different ways, making for a strange split decision.
2) We were 7 minutes behind 2x during the broadcast, resulting in several post fight interviews being skipped; including Cody Garbrant, who definitely had the worst combined luck of the night.
3) Cody Garbrant had a fight that can only be described as a nightmare when he vomited in the octagon after receiving a groin shot so direct, he undoubtedly needed medical attention afterward. Yet, he survived only to get hit 2x more in the same previous region.
4) Our BMF championship bout, while dominant, did not feel like a test of who is the baddest mother f-er alive.
Let me know all of your thoughts!!
Here is a fun summary of each fight
EARLY PRELIMS
Rodolfo Bellato vs Luke Fernandez (light heavyweight): Bellato started off looking a bit slow in the first round, and Luke looked really sharp and athletic. DC threw some mad shade, saying Bellato was less athletic. It's true, Bellato wasn't landing at first, but eventually a left hook finds its home toward the end of this 1st round and Bellato launches on top Fernandez like he's a grenade and he has to protect the surrounding citizens. A couple more, well a lot more ground strikes ensue, and Bellato plays spoiler with a R1 knockout. [Result: TKO R1 Bellato]
Rafael Tobias vs. Diyar Nurgozhay (light heavyweight): Here we had a decision that was controlled pretty much entirely by Nurgozhay. Din Thomas made a comment that Tobias was looking like he hadn't trained for a southpaw, and things were looking awkward. In R2 Tobias did look to take things to the ground, and continues that motivation to R3 as well. There were also a few times Tobias stunned Nurgozhay, but overall Nurgozhay kept it smooth and beat Tobias to the punch. The final sub threat Nurgozhay attempted might have become something, but we ran out of time. [Result: un. dec. Nurgozhay]
Su Mudaerji vs. Jesus Aguilar [flyweight]: Aguilar deployed his Mexican fighting spirit in this fight, but wasn't able to really get things going on the feet or on the ground against Su Mudaerji. Su Mudaerj is always looking long, since he is long indeed, and he kept Jesus out and away through movement lots of kicks. Jesus continues to try and crash in, but the crash ins weren't really result in a crash at all. When Jesus tried to get things to the ground, Sumi was ready and willing and even hit Jesus with a reversal in R2. We made it to a decision, with Su Mudaerji ahead and in control throughout. [Result: un dec. Su Mudaerji]
PRELIMS
Cody Durden vs. Nyamjargal Tumendemberel [flyweight]: Our first Cody of the night did mix things up in his approach here, throwing in a lot of grappling. Overall, this was a fight with very little striking, since Tumendemberel was more than happy to take it to the ground with Durden. During R1 it was Durden who was pushing for the grappling, but by R2 Tumendemberel was shooting his own takedowns and getting in some meaningful control time. Only 6 or so significant strikes landed for Durden throughout. [Result: un dec. Tumendemberel]
Ricky Turcios vs. Alberto Montes [featherweight]: Turcios made his featherweight debut and was looking like classic Ricky to start the fight out with some chaos and bold entrances into Montes space. Alberto made his UFC debut, stayed dialed in, kept his technique sturdy and tight. In R2 it was as quick as lightning, all of a sudden he had Ricky trapped. Within what felt like mere moments, Ricky was asleep in an anaconda choke hold. [Result: R2 anaconda choke Montes]. Alberto made an important call out to anyone listening to please take care of your mental health. Reach out to someone. <3
Donte Johnson vs. Cody Brundage (middleweight): We had a bit of a mess here in this fight. Brundage spent most of R1 on top of Johnson but did not get much if any damage. As the fight wavered it's way to a decision, it appeared Cody had lost his desire to engage. Meanwhile, Johnson kept his energy but his fight stance was strange to say the least. Johnson makes it to R3 for the first time in his career and comes out on top. [Result: split dec. Johnson]
Cody Garbrant vs. Xiao Long [bantamweight]: Our featured prelim was by far the most cursed fight of the night, if not the most cursed fight of the last 5 years. Things seemed well and good with Long landed a nasty head kick early and Cody survived it, as well as a knee to the jaw. We also made it through a clash of heads. As Long continued to get leggy, he nailed Cody in the sack for real. Garbrant was down bad, toes curled, then vomited in a bucket. Even after this, he rose like the warrior he is with a death stare in his eye. We reengage only for another nasty pp strike. Wow!! -2 points for Long, and Garbrant has had enough. He refused to engage for the remainder of the fight. [Result: un dec. (28-27) Garbrant]
MAIN CARD
Gregory Rodrigues vs. Brunno Ferreira [middleweight]: Brunno came out to Phil Colins, which usually means something big is going to happen. At the beginning of the fight, Brunno was putting on a lot of pressure, and Robocop was minding his own. Then lo and behold, behold and lo, a devastating right hand puts Brunno to sleepy. [Result: TKO R1 Rodriguez]
Drew Dober vs. Michael Johnson [lightweight]: A fabulous veteran matchup between two legendary southpaws known for their power. During the first round Johnson was looking really slick, but both men spent this time trying to feel each other out. As often is the case, Dober turned it up in R2 and during his getting going he landed a left hook that caused a system shutdown for Johnson. As often is the case as well, Dober kept it extremely classy and honored his tough opponent, admitting he was scared to fight him. [Result: TKO R2 Dober]
Rob Font vs. Raúl Rosas Jr. [bantamweight]: Rosas Jr. really did his thing in this fight and absolutely controlled Font, who tried to keep things tight early. By the end of R1 Rosas Jr. had already successfully landed 5 takedowns. Rosas Jr. kept this fight on the ground with a suffocating tone and looked like a fish in water. It was a dominant all three rounds for Raúl. [Result: un dec. (30-27) Rosas Jr.]
Caio Borralho vs. Reinier de Ridder [middleweight / co-main]: Two of our most dangerous middleweights sought to get themselves out of a precarious position, both coming off a loss. The crowd started chanting USA at the beginning of this fight which I found to be pretty funny. It didn’t last long. Caio was feeling himself early, and going at things with his trademark hands to the waist. RDR was staying busy but Caio looked unphased. Joe and DC kept commenting throughout the fight about Caio not respecting RDR’s power, and that is how he was moving throughout the fight. Borralho’s continued aggressive pushed him forward throughout this fight and kept RDR seeming to be just a little behind. RDR did find some takedown moments and was keeping things competitive in the strikes, but it wasn’t enough. [Result: un dec (30-27) Borralho]
Max Holloway vs. Charles Oliveira (lightweight / main event / BMF belt): Our battle for the BMF belt was painfully one sided and left many of us wondering about the future of this title. Right away Charles picked Max up in a way that made it look like Max was light and easy to manipulate. Charles kept him in a backpack hold for that first round, and did get a few elbows in. Max’s corned asked him if he felt strong after that round, and he said no. Complete dominance continued for Charles in R2 where he picked Max up again and bullied him on the ground with some elbows and a few sub threats. Throughout the final rounds Charles continues to put Max on the ground and occasionally offered some elbows. The crowd began to become impatient. Only in the final moments were we on the feet and in this time there was a massive strike landed by Charles that fired Max up as big strikes often do. We end the fight with Charles having amassed over 19 minutes of control time. [Result: un dec. (50-45) Oliveira]
So that’s the story folks! If it were any other fight, championship or not, I don’t think I would be bothered by Charles' performance at all. Bothered is still too extreme of a word choice even. However, when I try to accept the idea of a BMF belt, I am picturing an inherent agreement to put on a deeply violent showcase. We did not get that.
I would love to know all your thoughts and all the things!
No Noche UFC video amigos, lo siento. I will make it up to y’all with an incoming Dom Cruz special. You’ll know what I mean soon enough. So, let me know some of your favorite Dom Cruz fights and moments.
Shout out the Mexican fighting spirit!! Es realidad, do you believe yet? Our luchadores went 5-0 8-0 if you include our Mexican Americans and our honorary Mexican Diego Lopes!!
Shout out to who I thought were the biggest stars (in order of appearance):
Daniil Santiago Alexander Rafa And Diego!!
And finally - shout out to octagon girlies. They looked so beautiful!
Holy smokes what a crazy night of absolute highlights and record breaking comebacks. Alex The Great is king again! Yair is back in business baby! And looks like Paddy really is for real! Who should Paddy fight next?! Let me know your thoughts. Unfortunately I won’t be able to post a review/recap video for UFC 314 but will be back for Prates vs Machado Garry!!
