📜 Homer, Constantinople, and the Byzantine Scholars 🏛️
Seminar in Ancient Greek | Istanbul | February 24–March 1, 2025
Organized by Rogerus Byzantinus and Paolo Pezzuolo from Schola Humanistica
Join us for an immersive journey into Homer’s epics and their Byzantine interpretations. This week-long seminar will explore passages from Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, Eustathius’ monumental commentaries, Tzetzes' Antehomerica, and Prodromos’ Lucianesque dialogue about the poet Homer being sold in a 12th-century market in Constantinople.
To deepen our exploration, we’ll also read excerpts from:
📖 The Patria: Accounts of Medieval Constantinople 📖 Nikephoros Basilakes’ Rhetorical Exercises 📖 Paul the Silentiary’s Descriptio Sanctae Sophiae 📖 Skarlatos Byzantios’ Constantinople: A Topographical, Archaeological & Historical Description 📖 Libanius’ Progymnasmata: Model Exercises in Greek Prose Composition and Rhetoric
These readings will accompany visits to Istanbul’s most iconic sites, including Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, and Chora Church—all tours and discussions conducted entirely in Ancient Greek!
