A locked door. A hair clip. A split-second decision that ended a life.

A college track star is now behind bars after prosecutors say a confrontation inside an off-campus apartment in Jefferson City, Missouri turned deadly in the early morning hours of February 22.

According to court documents, 22-year-old sprinter Denita Jackson returned to the apartment she shared with other students from Lincoln University and suspected her boyfriend, 23-year-old fellow sprinter Kevaughn Goldson, was not where she had left him. Investigators allege she used a hair clip to unlock her roommate’s bedroom door and found Goldson in bed with the roommate. A cologne bottle that had reportedly caused tension in the relationship was said to be sitting between them.

Authorities say the discovery sparked a violent struggle. Court records state that Jackson told detectives she jumped onto the bed, grabbed Goldson’s shirt, and took the cologne before the altercation moved to the floor. She alleged that during the fight he kicked her, pinned her down, and choked her. Prosecutors say she then reached under the bed, retrieved a knife, and stabbed him.

Goldson was transported to a local hospital and later airlifted to a trauma center, where he died during surgery.

Jackson reportedly called 911 herself and has since been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. She is being held without bond as the campus community mourns the loss of a young athlete described as talented and full of promise.

What began as a personal dispute has now left one person dead and another facing life-altering consequences.
