As we step into a brand-new year, I want to take a moment to reflect on a journey that means the world to me. Starting my 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 was more than just a project—it was a mission to ensure that no one faces the struggles I did when building their technical career.

I’ve been there—feeling lost while trying to learn 𝙀𝙭𝙘𝙚𝙡, 𝙋𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙣, 𝙎𝙌𝙇, and other tools on my own. I know the frustration of preparing for interviews without proper guidance. These challenges taught me one thing: 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲-𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴.

If you are asked to find top 5 top selling product and you have used Limit 5

Well this seems technically right! But if you think from business perspective, there are two major issues -

1. There can more than 5 products which can be in the top 5 list. But putting a limit, you restrict to only 5. So, that’s an incomplete solution.
2. ⁠this code is not optimised for production because it will take more time to execute in a large dataset resulting in inefficient implementation.

Better to use window functions like dense_rank to solve this problem.

These are small but very crucial nuances that proves to be make or break in the interview.

SQL as a language is simple but without right business understanding, you might not solve the right problem.

One of the first thing we see in the resume for analytics hiring is the candidates’ work with KPI.

I see lot of people write lot of stuff but ignore the very basic things - how those KPI helped the business.

Just writing sql script for a KPI without understanding what that KPI is bringing to the table is a straight forward reject.

So, you need to bridge the gap between your tools knowledge and its application for business benefits.

In last 2 months, I have taken 20 interviews and selected only one candidates!

That is too bad conversion! isn't it?

Below are my observation:

30% applicants are not conversant with SQL at all
35% applicants are conversant with SQL but very poor in optimizing SQL queries
20% are good at SQL but are not able understand the business context
10% are good with SQL and understands the business context but not able to convert into data problem
5% all square talent that got recruited!

Its a RED FLAG for any hiring manager, if you don't belong to that top 5%.

Pay attention to three things (It is non-negotiable for data roles)

1. Start writing optimized code
2. Understand the business context.
3. Start to practice converting business problem to data problem.
