The Mysterious Stranger
It was recently brought to my attention by others — acquaintances — that the simple act of entering my name into a search engine now reveals a surreal distortion of reality.
I discovered my identity intertwined with a stream of imagery and calls to action that have no place in my life or my convictions. Finding my name serving as an endorsement for these actions—things I have never endorsed and never will—feels like a nightmare from a long-forgotten manuscript. To have my name hijacked to signal approval where there is only silence and dissent is a distortion I cannot accept. It is a strange, unwanted prominence—a glitch in the narrative of a person who simply wishes to build, not to destroy.
There is a certain cold comfort in the idea of an algorithmic error. I find myself sincerely hoping that this is nothing more than the blind work of a bot-net or a stray line of code in some vast, unfeeling indexing machine. A soulless mathematical mistake is easy to forgive; it is merely noise in the system.
I cling to the hope that this is merely a failure of the machine, for the alternative is far more grieving. To think that this could be an intentional act—a deliberate attempt by another human to distort a life—fills me with a profound and weary sadness. In a world that already feels like an unpredictable theater of the absurd, to find malice where there should be soul is the ultimate tragedy.
