Today I’m playing with granulating watercolor in a 12-piece wonky circle grid using Shadow Turquoise from Masha’s handmade watercolor collection. I layer in graphite mark making, then finish with shimmering gold details for that modern mixed media vibe.

Working in the studio, I made TWO mixed media abstracts, and it felt like the creative reset my brain needed. 🎨
I started with Kissho Gansai watercolors, then layered in playful stencil marks with acrylic for that contrast of soft + bold.
The color palette came from a Color Cube, which I love when I want to loosen up and stop overthinking every choice.

In today’s session, I pulled a Color Cube combo and let it lead the way while I painted 4 loose, expressive abstract pieces with Shinhan gouache. I love gouache for this kind of work because it gives me rich opacity, vibrant color, and the freedom to layer marks fast without getting precious.

Abstract days always humble me a little. I started this one with a moody palette inspired by my Color Cube, Payne’s gray + ocher, and I fully expected it to flow.
It did not. 😅
I kept layering watercolor and acrylic ink, chasing texture and balance, and I hit that familiar spot where everything feels almost right but also kind of… stuck. Then I made one bold move, I added gold to the top.
Instant shift. The whole piece finally made sense.
