A study tested experienced developers using AI tools on their own codebases.
The result shocked the research community.
They were 19% slower with AI than without it.
Not faster. Slower.
But here is the detail that makes it worse. Before the study, those same developers predicted AI would make them 24% faster. After experiencing the slowdown themselves, they still believed AI had sped them up by 20%.
The gap between how AI productivity feels and what it actually measures was 39 percentage points.
Companies are firing junior developers because they believe AI makes their senior developers faster. The data says the opposite is happening.
