🩺⚖️ Medicolegal Tip of the Day: Issuing Death Certificates

💡 Always certify the cause of death only if you have personally attended the patient and are satisfied it was a natural death.

Key points for doctors:
1. Do NOT issue a death certificate if:
• The death is sudden, unexpected, accidental, homicidal, suicidal, or of unknown cause.
• The patient was brought dead.
• You have not treated the patient recently (usually within the last 14 days).
• There is any suspicion of poisoning, negligence, assault, or medical procedure–related complications.
2. Such cases must be referred to the police for medico-legal postmortem.
3. Mention only medical causes—never write vague terms like “cardiac arrest” or “respiratory failure” as standalone causes.
4. Ensure proper identification of the deceased and documentation in hospital records before certification.
5. Avoid pressure from relatives—issuing a wrongful certificate can attract charges under IPC and disciplinary action under NMC regulations.
