My Old Homestead

A few years or maybe a couple of lives ago, I said I would cycle to Lisbon. Some thought I was joking. I wasn’t. I’m not much of a joker anyway.

A couple of years ago, I said I would build a house. Not in the sense that I pay and someone else does it, but actually myself. At times even I didn’t quite believe it, but here I am, living in it now. It’s not finished, of course. My grandmother had a bathtub and an indoor toilet in this farmhouse back in the 1960s. Some people still don’t have that today. For example, me. I will get there. Friends have said they are waiting for a surprise visit once the bathroom is done. I would like to see them too.

But right now I am building a garden. A garden. The scale keeps growing. There is a bit of permaculture and quite a few more exotic crops that also happen to be edible.

Fig trees, persimmon, pawpaw, walnut and more are waiting to be planted. Mulberry, quince and honestly, I have already lost track of half of it, but they should arrive soon. Some trees will have to wait until next year.

AI has turned out to be surprisingly competent in gardening. I consult it constantly. Sometimes it feels like it is more alive than I am.

Videos are so and so. Right now more so and so. If the weather forecast is right and snow starts falling, I will definitely make a longer video in English for the My Old Homestead channel. Shorter Estonian ones I have been posting a bit more often on Ellujäämise aed. TikTok rules.

I even ended up arguing with them at one point. They claimed my talented neighbor boy Markus is dangerous. So I am not allowed to be dangerous then? Or was it that inappropriate content thing? Either way, I pushed back. Anyone who knows me will not be surprised.

I was right. They put the video back, but it never really got any reach.

Honestly, inappropriate, if that is what it was, has never really bothered me.

But for now, the garden. I will show it too. Just not today.

Przewalski’s ligularia turned out to be a big surprise and should bloom proudly by the pond this summer.
