Did you catch ETCS being mentioned on BBC Tech Now?
It featured the Northern City Line (Britain’s first urban commuter railway to be fully controlled by ETCS) and the benefits ETCS is bringing – which presenter Paul Carter eloquently described as ‘the brain’ of the railway.
Some of our ECDP colleagues joined the show, including Simon Cowley, GTR (Govia Thameslink Railway)'s Testing Training Manager from inside the driver’s cab, Matt Rose, Signaller Manager Trainer at Network Rail and Joe Marshall, Signaller at York ROC at Network Rail. Sarah-Jane Crawford, our Industry Partnership Director also talked about how the benefits of ETCS can be exploited across the railway.
Huge thanks go to GTR and to Network Rail Eastern Region East Coast Operations at York ROC for their support in enabling this.
We spoke to some of our team who were out on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) throughout February completing essential updates and testing on our European Train Control System (ETCS) systems and equipment.
The East Coast Digital Programme will transform our railway through digital in-cab signalling to be more efficient, more reliable, greener and even safer. Find out more about the rigorous testing we are doing in our latest video.
Positive progress made at Hertford North’s Access for All scheme 🙌💜
Progress continues at pace on accessibility upgrades at Hertford North, helping to make the station more inclusive and welcoming.
The project involves installing a new lift to platform 1, providing all passengers – particularly those with limited mobility, heavy luggage or pushchairs – with a step-free, more accessible route to the platform.
The project recently reached a new milestone with the new lift shaft superstructure installed and lift shaft cladding completed.
Carl Martin, accessibility lead for Great Northern, which operates Hertford North station, said: “It’s extremely encouraging to see progress being made.
Our community at Hertford North deserves full access to the station, which is why we were so pleased when the government confirmed funding for this scheme.”
“The installation of the lift shaft superstructure marks a key step towards making Hertford North more accessible for all our passengers. We continue to work closely with industry partners to deliver these improvements as quickly as possible and we’re grateful to residents for their patience and support while the upgrades are being carried out.”
We have added an additional weekday services to the morning rush hour with another planned for the evening peak to provide more seats and faster journeys our passengers at many stations between Cambridge, Letchworth Garden City and London King’s Cross 🙌
The two services are a follow-up to the successful series of improvements we introduced last December as part of the time table change.

We're proud to have launched with our community partners the first of three 'Model Stations', designed to set a standard for how we want our stations to look, feel and operate.
Enfield Chase in north London has been transformed in line with clear, customer-focused principles of design, accessibility, safety, customer service and overall customer experience.
The station environment at Enfield Chase is now simpler to navigate, more welcoming and more inclusive with staff who have been through a new Great Journey Makers training programme to deliver brilliant customer service.
To guide passengers effortlessly on their journey, all parts have been decluttered and zoned into areas that include planning your journey, buying your tickets and starting your journey with clear, real-time information.
The station has been deliberately chosen to show what can be achieved to make the station more accessible despite not having step-free access. A Blue Badge parking bay has been created near the entrance and signs and information have been rethought following a survey by the National Autistic Society. Two other London stations with different degrees of step-free access - Gipsy Hill and Elstree & Borehamwood - will receive the model station treatment by early summer.
As our Chief Customer Officer Louis Rambaud said: "We want to create a blueprint for stations across the country, one that creates environments that passengers find welcoming, clean and comfortable, safe, secure, digitised, accessible and inclusive with ‘model staff’ serving their communities and customers."
We’ll be inviting our managers to visit the completed locations as they come online, to take pictures and consider how they can bring their stations up to a similar standard.
Fresh, talented and growing in influence, we're joined by South London singer-songwriter, Kelli-Leigh - one of the UK's most exciting up and coming stars in popular music. Kelli-Leigh's signature vocals have landed 3 UK Top 10 records, 2 UK Number 1s, 2 Billboard Dance chart number 1s & 2 Grammy nominated records.
Dubbed The voice of UK house music summer 2014, Kelli-Leigh’s voice has been streamed well over 1 Billion times. Hailing from South London, Kelli-Leigh’s voice can be heard on ‘I Got U’ for Duke Dumont & Jax Jones, ‘I Wanna Feel’ for Second City & 2017 summer smash ‘More Than Friends’ with James Hype.
Kelli-Leigh's star is rising and she is fast becoming one of the UK's main Vocal Artists in Dance/Pop. In her life as a solo singer-songwriter, she has already proven she is willing to fuse something new, as she blends soul, pop, R&B and electro in a way that very few artists are doing in the same way. A fantastic personality able to intoxicate both with her musical talent and charm, Kelli-Leigh is a contemporary force in music that is here to stay.
Listen in as Kelli discusses her new debut album LEGACY, what South London means to her and where she gets her inspiration from as a songwriter.
He's usually up a mountain in budgy smugglers, but today he's decided to leave the hiking and join us on our Railblazers Podcast!
We're joined by the Founder of Hixe Community, Callum Heinrich @callumxheinrich who has been helping get people out of the city and into nature with his community hikes from London!
