Mahamana Dasa: So the first lecture that I heard Srila Prabhupada giving was; in that lecture, although I had no idea what this philosophy or anything is about, somehow I entered the temple. Srila Prabhupada was sitting on the vyasasana and the first thing I heard Prabhupada say was, "Krishna is present in the Deities (pointing out to the Deities). Krishna is there, but if you think that he is a stone then He will remain a stone." That seemed to be a very profound statement to me at that time. I had no idea what this was. But he was saying with so much emphasis and so much conviction, "Krishna is there. But if you think He is just a stone, then He will remain a stone."
And then in that same lecture, Prabhupada said, "Practice Krishna consciousness seriously and don't show off. Don't take to this Krishna consciousness just for showing off." I couldn't analyze why exactly at that particular point Prabhupada had said that. But this is what he said, "Don't take to Krishna consciousness just for showing off." . . . . . . . .
âIf we become God conscious, Krishna conscious, the fighting in the world will come to an end. âI am American,â âI am Indian,â âI am Russian,â âI am Chineseââall these nonsensical designations will be finished. The Krishna consciousness movement is so purifying that as soon as people become Krishna conscious, political and national fighting will immediately be over, because they will come to their real consciousness and understand that everything belongs to God.â
The philosophy of God consciousness is the basis of all genuine morality, but in the West the established religions have been unable to inculcate moral principles into society at large. In fact, crime in the United States has gotten so bad that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Warren Burger, once felt compelled to decry âthe reign of terror in American cities.â
Realizing the urgent need for practical spiritual knowledge, Srila Prabhupada conceived and began a society in which all the members agreed to factually give up sinful, antisocial activities and perform all their works for the pleasure of God, Krishna. Because he strictly forbade the taking of intoxicants (even tea or cigarettes) and indulgence in illicit sex, gambling, and meat-eating, many people were put off. But many joined as well, once they began participating in the sublime practices of chanting Hare Krishna and engaging in Krishnaâs service. . . . . . . . .
Srila Prabhupada taught us how to please Lord Krishna by taking full shelter of Srimati Radharani:
âAnyone who comes before Radharani to serve Krishna , oh, She becomes so pleased, ´Oh, here is a devotee of Krishna !´ She immediately recommends, âKrishna , oh, here is a devotee. He is better than Me.â This is Radharani. I may be a, not devotee. I may be most fallen rascal. But if I try to reach Krishna through Radharani, then my business is successful. Therefore we should worship Radharani first. That is our business. Instead of offering directly one flower to Krishna , you just put it in the hands of Radharani: âMy mother Radharani, Jagan-mata, if you kindly take this flower and offer it to Krishna .â âOh,â Radharani says, âOh, you have brought a flower?â Krishna said, patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati BG 9.26, but don´t try to offer Krishna directly. Just offer through Radharani. It will be very much appreciated by Radharani.â
So today is a day where we can get down on our knees and pray to Radharani for mercy.
Srila Prabhupada guides us further:
âSo this is our philosophy, to please Krishna through Radharani. Just today is the auspicious day of Radharani´s appearance. So we should offer puspanjali and pray to Radharani that âRadharani, kindly be merciful and tell about me Your Krishna . Krishna is Yours.â Krishna , Radha-Krishna . Krishna is not independent. Krishna is Radharani´s property. So you have to approach Krishna through Radharani. That is, today is the auspicious day. Worship Radharani very nicely and be happy.â
(Both quotes are excerpts from Srila Prabhupadaâs Lecture on Radhastami, given in London, Sep 5, 1073)
So here Prahläda Mahäräja says, Êçvarasya mahi güÍämi: âI shall glorify the Lord.â âOh, you are a child, sir. You are five years old. How you can glorify?â Yathä manĂŠĂąam! âIt doesnât matter I am child! Whatever I have got, I shall express my feelings, âO God, O Lord, oh, You are so great.â â Thatâs all right. How you can describe or understand His glories? That is not possible. Heâs unlimited. But whatever limitation you have got, if you express feelingly, âMy God, My Lord,â that will be accepted. That will be accepted. So Caitanya Mahäprabhu therefore teaches us how to pray. This prayer is na dhanaĂ na janaĂ na sundariĂ kavitäà vä jagadÊça kämaye [Cc. Antya 20.29, Shikshasta 4]. Everyone is praying to God with some interest. That is also good. If you go and pray to God, âGive me some moneyâ or âGive me some relief,â âGive me a nice house, nice wife, nice foodstuff,â that is also good. But not so good as one is praying to God that âI donât want any money I donât want any number of followers. I donât want any good wife, nice beautiful wife.â âThen what do you want?â âI want to serve You. Thatâs all.â Finish your prayer. That is the best prayer. âYou are so good, You are so nice, You are so great that I want to be engaged in Your service. I am serving these rascals. They are not satisfied, I am not satisfied. Now I have come to You. Please engage me in Your service.â That is the last word of prayer. Jai ĹrÄŤla PrabhupÄda ji đ đââď¸ đ â¤ď¸ đš
