I LOVE singing this over myself and over each of you on the cusp of a new year with new hopes and intentions and maybe even some resolutions. I LOVE reminding myself that no matter how much I succeed or fail and attempting to grow and become the healthiest version of myself, the love of the Lord endures forever. We can rest in the beautiful truth that we are beloved works in progress, held in the loving hands of the One who made us.

FWF Caption: Praying this verse will remind you that you are a work in progress, a beloved son or daughter of the One who made you. Love doesn’t give up on you. Love has good plans to grow good things in your heart and your life. Love invites you into the process of growing, letting go, and trusting that all the while, you're in the hands of a good gardener. God does not abandon the work of His hands. You are his beloved. You are in the hands of the one who made you and loves you.

Happy New Year! I love new beginnings, and I’d love to invite you into something I’m doing this year. I’ll be beginning my year with a day of quiet listening and reflection. This is taking some help from my husband and a babysitter, but I’m so looking forward to holding a space to look back and look forward. I long to be more intentional with my time and gifts and energy in a new way this year. I am hoping to create some rhythms of rest as well. Whether it’s a day, or an hour, or even five minutes, I hope you’ll join me in taking some space to dream and wonder about the new things that might be in store for you this year. Grateful for the story we celebrate at Christmas as well, reminding us that God is in the business of sending light into the darkness we face, and hope into every hopeless corner of our lives and this world. May you know this comfort and hope in a new way this year. Thanks for holding onto the light with me all these years in this little corner of instagram. It’s my joy to sing alongside each of you.

Peace on earth. Lord, thank you for the peace that you have secured for us. Even in the midst of this world being broken, we find a reason to sing. Even in the darkest nights, we find a light still shining. Thank you for writing the most beautiful story I know. Thank you that we are never alone. Thank you that darkness never gets the final word. As we gather with family and friends this week, as we see the lights adorning trees and homes, may we be reminded that we are all the recipients of the glad tidings of God’s love. May this light bring us great joy today and every day. Merry Christmas to each of you. I’m praying that the hope and light of Christ warms your hearts and homes this year.

“Guide our feet into a path of peace.” I love this prayer for this moment in time. In our country that feels so starkly divided, I pray that this verse will come to fruition in every way possible. In our own stories, in our communities, in our government, and in our world. Thank you for mercy, Lord. Thank you for your light. May we carry the light into every sphere of our lives, remembering where the source is from, and sharing gladly the JOY of new morning mercies and unfailing love that are ours because of the story we celebrate during this season. May these promises remind us that our hope is not in our government, but in the Light of the world….”and the government shall be upon his shoulders.” Oh God, come guide us as we try to learn how to follow Jesus in paths of peace.

I also love this quote from Richard Rohr about the light that Jesus brings:
“Darkness has always been here, and the only real question is how to receive the light and spread the light.” - Preparing for Christmas, Richard Rohr

Oh Lord, help us hold onto your light and carry it into the world in peace.

It’s hard to imagine how Mary must have felt. A young girl, from a small town, is chosen to be the mother of Jesus? This seems like a backwards and upside down way for a king to come, and of course, that is often the theme of the kingdom of God. Backwards, upside down, and small, like a seed. I love her humble wonder. I pray that I might move throughout all of my days in humble wonder at the beauty of the Christmas story. Jesus enters, fully man, fully God, into our broken world through a humble girl, who lived a surrendered “yes” to what God had for her. May we hold onto the wonder of the wildness and smallness of this story, that changed everything. May we live our lives with the same surrendered “yes” that Mary lived.

I love John, and I love that he is always so clear that he didn’t come as the light himself, but as a witness to the light. He wanted to tell everybody, everywhere about the hope and the light of Christ. Oh God, may we hold onto the hope of the LIGHT of Christ. When we see Christmas lights this December, may we remember that light is always stronger than the darkness. May we remember to carry the light of Your love into every space we enter. May we shine, “incandescent with gratitude”, for the beautiful story that we remember and celebrate each christmas, for the story of Love bending low, of Heaven coming to walk among us, so we could know that we NEVER WALK ALONE. Oh great light of the world, fill us up with your light and love, especially on the nights that the darkness feels like it will engulf us.

I also love that John emphasizes that the true light gives light to EVERY MAN. The message of Christmas is for ALL of us. May we be the bearers of good news, singing for the joy of knowing the light of God’s love is for every human on the planet. The greatest gift of all is getting to remember that we are ALL and ALWAYS loved.

I’m so THANKFUL for every single one of YOU. Thank you for holding onto the light alongside me, and thank you for the words of encouragement that you send my way here in this little corner of the internet. I love you and I pray my page, my music, and my books would always point you to the wonderful truth that you can rest in the enduring love of God. I hope you have had a sweet week of rest with people that you love. And if not, for whatever reason….things felt tense, you are missing dear ones who have gone too soon, you’re grieving or longing for something to change that just feels stuck, I pray you’ll find a space to take a few deep breaths and soak in the goodness of knowing that wherever you are, whatever hopes or joys or fears or sorrows you carry in your heart, you are carried in the everlasting arms of enduring LOVE.

I love that the people in this passage didn’t realize they were talking with the Bread of life. They didn’t know that they were listening to the voice who first called all things into Creation. They had just asked for the miraculous bread that they had seen or heard of before, like the manna that fell from heaven, but they had the source of all LIFE sitting right next to them there at the lake. This feels so familiar…So often I’ll be asking for the answer, for the problem to go away, for something to change, and I’ll be frustrated that it’s not going like I want it to go, when God is right beside me, offering His companionship and grace and presence to me. God’s love is the sustenance we need along the journey.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m still a big fan of asking specifically for what we need, for asking like kids, and I’ve seen God move in small details for sure , providing needs when I ask for them, but what I really don’t want to miss is the actual presence of the Bread of Life that satisfies even in the desert places, that nourishes in the valleys, that soaks up our tears when we can’t stop crying, that lets us collapse in steady, safe arms when everything around us is shaking.
We are weary and need your presence to sustain us as we continue to move through these days in the wake of deep darkness and loss. Would You show us the light? Sustain us with your love and compassion.

The image of God being a hiding place, a place of protection is so precious to me. I have come to this verse often when I have been afraid, during seasons when I have felt under attack, whether by someone’s words here on instagram, by an onslaught of fears or worries, by an intensely busy schedule that feels like it will drown me, or by the weight of this broken world and the sadness that can sometimes just come crashing down over my head.

This promise from Psalm 32:7 reminds me that I never have to face any of that alone, which is deeply comforting to me. I always have a shelter built of love, and the door is always open, and no matter how dark things get, there is light and hope and peace inside. Not only that…there is this image in this verse that reminds me of a mother. I love imagining God as a mother, holding a scared or sad or sick child to her chest, rocking and humming softly the songs that bring comfort to the most weary and trembling soul. Whatever you face today, I pray that you’ll be reminded that you are not alone. God is with you. God is holding you, protecting you, and humming songs of deliverance over you. What a precious and intimate peek into the heart of God to care so tenderly and so well for all of us.
