On The Move

In 1914 when the world was entering WW1, Ernest Shackleton and a crew of 27 men set off on an attempt to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic continent. They set off to sail the Weddell sea aboard the Endurance, but soon got caught in pack ice.

The crew spent several months living through the Antarctic winter aboard the ship, which was slowly being crushed by ice. On the 27th of October, 1915, Shackleton finally gave the order to abandon ship and the crew moved camp onto the ice. It took 6 months before the pack ice gave out, forcing the crew to sail to the nearby Elephant Island on salvaged lifeboats. Lifeboats were turned upside-down to provide shelter while nutrition was obtained from penguins and seals.

In a desperate attempt to find help, Shackleton and the ship's captain, Worsley, set off on an open lifeboat to the nearby whaling station. Using only a sextant, Worsley was able to navigate the boat 800 miles through harsh storms, narrowly missing sending the crew into the open ocean.

Two attempts have been made in the past to locate the infamous Endurance ship, but each time the expedition has run short. We are happy to announce that this time, we’ve found it!

The shipwreck itself will remain untouched, forever resting in the Weddell Sea where it once sank.

An epic documentary will appear later in the year by National Geographic!

Did you know?

On Jan. 1, 1914, the world's first scheduled passenger airline service took off, operating between St. Petersburg and Tampa, Fla. The St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line was a short-lived endeavour — only four months — but it paved the way for today's daily transcontinental flights.
