A beautiful benefit shared by Shk Abdul Salam As-Suhaymi:

“A methodological benefit from the noble scholar Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn in his explanation of Bulūgh al-Marām, Book of Sales (9/422), clarifying the cause behind deviating from the correct understanding of the sharʿī texts:

He said:
“The cause; and it is the flaw one must purge oneself from, is that a person first forms a belief, then looks for evidence to support it.
For when a person believes in something beforehand and then goes to seek evidence, he will try; regarding every text that contradicts his preconceived belief, to distort it so that it fits what he already believes. At that point, he makes the texts follow (and serve) his views rather than lead them.

But the obligation upon the believer is to seek evidence first, then form his belief, making his beliefs follow the proofs, so that the evidences remain the leaders, not the ones being led.”
