The three children were tending sheep at Cova da Iria when they saw a flash of light. A Lady “brighter than the sun” appeared above a small holm oak tree. She was dressed in white, with a rosary of white beads.
Our Lady’s Message — First Apparition
1. Do not be afraid “Do not be afraid. I will not harm you.” She immediately put the children at ease, showing that Heaven comes in peace.
2. Heaven is real She told them she was “from Heaven” and promised that Jacinta and Francisco would go to Heaven soon. Lucia would stay longer because Jesus wanted to use her to establish devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
3. Call to sacrifice for sinners “Are you willing to offer yourselves to God and bear all the sufferings He wills to send you, as an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and of supplication for the conversion of sinners?” The children said “Yes.” Our Lady replied: “Then you will have much to suffer, but the grace of God will be your comfort.”
4. Pray the Rosary daily for peace “Pray the Rosary every day, to bring peace to the world and an end to the war.” This was 1917 during WWI. She tied peace directly to prayer.
5. A vision of grace She opened her hands and light streamed from them, penetrating the children. Lucia later said they felt “moved by an interior impulse” that made them fall to their knees, praying.
Prayer to Our Lady of Fatima *O Most Holy Virgin Mary, Queen of the Rosary and Mother of Mercy, who at Fatima revealed to the three little shepherds the treasures of grace hidden in the Rosary, inspire our hearts with a sincere love of this devotion. Through the mysteries of our Redemption recalled therein, may we obtain peace for the world, the conversion of sinners, and the favors we now so earnestly seek. [mention your intention here]
Our Lady of Fatima, Refuge of Sinners, pray for us. Our Lady of the Rosary, teach us to pray, to make sacrifices, and to trust in the promises of your Immaculate Heart. We consecrate ourselves to you, and we ask you to lead us ever closer to your Son, Jesus our Lord and Saviour. Amen.
