Academic and Research Focus

Dr. Abukari's scholarship centres on improving the health, development, and wellbeing of children and their families through evidence-based interventions and family-centred approaches to care. His major research interests include:

- Paediatric and neonatal nursing
- Paediatric critical care
- Infectious disease prevention and control
- Family-centred care
- Nursing and midwifery education
- Maternal and newborn health
- Perinatal epidemiology
- Postnatal immunisation
- Essential newborn care

A significant strand of his research has focused on family-centred care within neonatal and paediatric intensive care settings, including the experiences of families and healthcare professionals, barriers to family participation, and the development of conceptual models and guidelines for integrating family-centred care into intensive care practice.

His scholarship also addresses maternal and newborn health, including breastfeeding, maternal knowledge and practices, preterm motherhood, postnatal immunisation, and essential newborn care. Through this work, he contributes to the development of evidence that can inform nursing practice, healthcare policy, education, and service delivery in resource-constrained settings.
