Several wildfires are growing rapidly this afternoon in western Türkiye and on Crete as a dangerous northerly wind surge builds in the Aegean Sea that looks to last for a several days. Two here in SW Türkiye were seen this afternoon by Aqua MODIS.

The Meteosat-12 imagery just in from dawn this morning shows the smoke from the Gironde and Biscarrosse wildfires has moved inland and covers SW France. Heat signatures are partially obscured by cloud and smoke but give and indication of the shift in fire direction to be directed inland towards communities in the west and southwest outskirts of Bordeaux. 220,000 evacuated according to BBC.

There has been a widespread demolition of the all time UK June temperature record over the last 2 days, but Merryfield appears to hold the new record for the moment at 36.7 C, that's 1.1 C above the hottest ever June day before yesterday. A similar thing happened last month where 2 days in succession in late May broke the all time UK May temperature record multiple times.
