Welcome to The AIR space! The place for airbrush tutorials, airbrush artwork, gear reviews and soo much more coming soon!
Formerly W Leon Artistry I felt a change to The AIR space was much more representative of what we do here! If it atomizes paint we LOVE IT!
The AIR space
Winter is HERE. So my atomizing enthused friends are frantically looking for ways to keep painting indoors.
So whenever we talk painting indoors we are usually going to focus on water based paints. And voc of water based paints.
It is a pretty easy process to capture particulates. Voc however is not. It has to be
Adsorbed (not absorbed) and captured
Or ventilated.
So lets talk VOC concentration
I will use the Createx 4021 as an example.
Since we know the chemical makeup and we also know the voc concentration level per L. Which is expressed as
VOC 95.86 g/L (early SDS sheets for 4021 are a bit off this is a draft sent by the owner of the company to me and I was given permission to share, the old SDS didn't list the secondary ingredient)
I would calculate as if all of the voc were Methoxy 2 propanol. Since that ingredient is slightly more hazardous than the secondary ingredient. (which is to say 4021 is LESS hazardous than 4011 and much less than the old 4012) But neither create me much cause for concern.
OSHA exposure limits List at 100 PPM
With a short term exposure limit of 150 ppm.
Now the math is pretty complex. But you can plug into AI these days to solve. its going to need a few things to get an accurate answer
however how you word it will dramatically affect the answer.. I found AI attempted to correct the question leading to wild errors. But if you "deep dive" it corrects itself .
So I calculated 1/3rd of an ounce or 10ml of reducer.
For a 10 foot by 10 foot by 8 foot tall room (a smallish bedroom)
Aerosolized a full 10ml. (the size of a full c cup) of straight reducer
And you should get an answer approximately of 11.5 PPM
This is assuming a set temperature and atmospheric pressure, which is to say that number will change depending on temperature and where you live.
And that would be in a sealed room. which none of us have.
I have a small air quality monitor. which can be wildly inaccurate but they can be useful to see trending up and down. I have access to much better dedicated particulate counters.
VOC is much harder to measure and cannot differentiate between harmful and not harmful VOC without some expensive equipment.
now those VOC levels are clearly not alarming, but if we are concerned do we have to vent our booths outside? Well the good news is VOC is easy to ventilate at low CFM.
If you have a booth vented to the outside it's going to draw air to replace that air. you have to allow for that. And you have to allow to heat that.
Here is the calculation
CFM x 1.08 x delta t.
Delta t is the difference between outdoor and indoor air.
So let's say your booth is 200 cfm.
and like today its 40 degrees cooler outside than my room (its a little more than that here today IN F NOT C
Sorry I didn't calculate the rest of the world )
Your heat loss is 200x1.08x40
8640 BTU. Roughly 3/4 of a ton.
That's half my entire HVAC Capacity.
Clearly my 600 CFM booth won't be able to run.
So I recirculate through merv 11 filters with a pre filter on them. (actually I run those year round).
I run 10 PC fans attached to filters currently with a variable speed controller. they give me a confirmed and tested 90 plus feet per minute airflow on high. I honestly run them at half speed. They are quieter than a portable heater. and much quieter than a box fan.
For VOC ? I ventilate if im sealed up in here a long time. Through the day I come in and out doors are opened and closed.
Generally PM 2.5 is more concerning than VOC when it comes to water based paints. The numbers on that monitor are excessive in that picture. When im in the studio running my filters (usually always as the added benefit of being air cleaners) Im usually aiming to keep that number in the low teens. and often its below 10.
Now for funsies look up how high VOC's get when cooking .
Stay Safe Keep warm.
Bill.

I appreciate those who hung around waiting for me to get back to YouTube.. I AM working on content.
It's a whole long list of things that kept me away, an injury to my shoulder, which was complicated by tremors in my hands making painting difficult. I did about 6 months physical therapy.
But enough of that.. working out in my head a better way to explain how to airbrush fire. So expect a series of videos on the topic.
I appreciate every single one of you guys!

So I quickly sprayed these up.. Comparing side by side with all of the new createx illustration colors next to their close hue matches. So people could get to see the difference.
I realize this is a little hastily thrown together but useful in that its actual sprayed. All were sprayed straight out of the bottle cleaning the airbrush between colors. Some are very close like the BV yellow and P Orange.
Titan Buff will be on my short list as a quick tintable base for light skin tones to me.
But the black is significant. I've always felt it was just a touch light. The new flat black is darker significantly than the original black. And I was always adding colors to black to give it a bit more heft.. and it was a bit warmer than id like. This will be on my buy a large bottle ASAP Hope this helps a little!
