Deep in the frozen wilderness of Antarctica stands **Mount Erebus**, the southernmost active volcano on Earth. It's already famous for having one of the world's few permanent lava lakes, but scientists discovered something even more incredible.
It releases **tiny crystals of pure gold** into the atmosphere.
According to research, Mount Erebus emits around **80 grams (2.8 ounces)** of microscopic gold particles every single day.
✨ These gold crystals are so small they are almost invisible, yet they've been found in snow around the volcano and even detected **up to 620 miles (1,000 km) away**.
Unlike many other volcanoes that release gold in chemical compounds, Mount Erebus is unusual because it emits **pure crystalline gold**.
So why isn't anyone mining it?
The gold is scattered across thousands of square miles of Antarctic ice, making it impossible to collect economically. The harsh environment makes the challenge even greater.
Scientists believe the gold forms when volcanic gases carrying gold cool rapidly in Antarctica's freezing air, allowing tiny crystals to develop before drifting away in the wind.

📍 California's Santa Clara Valley, including San Jose, was one of the first places in the U.S. where groundwater-related land subsidence was documented.
As droughts become more frequent and groundwater is used faster than nature can replace it, scientists warn that some agricultural regions could face increasing risks to farmland, infrastructure, and water supplies.

🚀 Russia says it has developed a plasma engine that could cut the journey to Mars to just **30 days**.
Unlike traditional rockets that burn chemical fuel, this experimental engine uses **hydrogen plasma**. Hydrogen is ionized into charged particles and then accelerated by powerful magnetic fields, producing continuous thrust over long periods.
In laboratory tests, Russia's state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, says its **300-kilowatt prototype** accelerated plasma to **100 km/s (62 miles per second)**.
If the technology can be successfully scaled for spaceflight, a one-way trip to Mars could take **30 to 60 days** instead of the **6 to 9 months** required by today's chemical rockets.
A faster journey would have major benefits:

At 4:24 a.m. EDT on June 21, 2026, Earth reaches the June solstice, marking the longest day and shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
Here’s what happens:
🌎 The Northern Hemisphere is tilted 23.5° toward the Sun.
☀️ The Sun follows its highest and longest path across the sky.
🕒 Northern U.S. sees up to 16 hours of daylight.
🌅 Parts of Alaska and northern Canada enjoy nearly 20 hours of daylight.
🌞 Above the Arctic Circle, the Sun doesn’t set at all, creating the incredible Midnight Sun.
Many people think summer happens because Earth is closer to the Sun. That’s actually a myth.
The real reason is Earth’s axial tilt. During the June solstice, sunlight strikes the Northern Hemisphere more directly and for a longer period each day, bringing warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours.
After the solstice, the days will slowly begin getting shorter as Earth continues its journey toward the September equinox.

A promising new breakthrough in Alzheimer’s research could change how we fight the disease.
Scientists have discovered a treatment that doesn’t just target Alzheimer’s plaques. It helps the brain clean itself.
In a healthy brain, special proteins called P-glycoprotein (P-gp) act like waste pumps, removing toxic amyloid-beta before it can build up. In Alzheimer’s disease, these pumps become weaker, allowing harmful plaques to accumulate.
Researchers tested a copper-based compound called Cu(ATSM) in mice and found remarkable results:
🧠 Increased the brain’s waste-clearing pumps by 24%.
🧠 Reduced toxic amyloid-beta plaques by 42%.
🧠 Improved learning and memory by 44% after just 56 days.
Instead of simply attacking existing plaques, this approach restores the brain’s own natural waste-disposal system. That could represent an entirely new direction for Alzheimer’s treatment.
These findings are from animal studies, not human clinical trials. It is still unknown whether the same benefits will occur in people with Alzheimer’s disease.
However, Cu(ATSM) has already been studied in other neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease and ALS, which may help accelerate future Alzheimer’s trials.
