The Midnight Archives

You know the story. You don't know what they left out.

I'm Rohail. I make long-form documentaries about the darkest corners of history, mythology, folklore and the stories we grew up with. I'm on camera in every episode, and I research and write each script myself from the original sources.

The origins that were sanitised. The people who were erased. The history that was too uncomfortable for a classroom. If it was buried, I dig it up.

New episodes every week. Keep the candle lit.

The Midnight Archives

Hello Archivists,

A few of you pushed back on the weekly themes and the point was a fair one. If I pick a subject you are not interested in, that is a whole week of videos you end up skipping. That is the opposite of what I was going for.

So, I have a few themed weeks already built and I will see those through, but after that I will vary it properly. Something for everyone rather than everything for some of you.

On the schedule, I am aiming for three videos a week. Worth being upfront that not all three will be as long as what you are used to. Some will be shorter. Same research, same standard, the runtime just will not always stretch.

Last thing, and this is the one I have been sitting on for a while.

I have started a second channel: The Midnight Mythos.

https://youtu.be/0vTLLBZVkuk

Same essence as this one, same care taken, but the focus is mythology. The first video is up now, the entire story of Greek mythology, and I would really like to know what you make of it.

I am still reading my way through a few of the myths, so uploads over there will be less frequent to begin with, but I am aiming for at least one a week.

One thing I want to be straight about. The Midnight Mythos is narrated entirely by the Mythkeeper. There is no world in which I can narrate two channels at once, so if that channel is going to exist at all, it exists with him telling the stories. Nothing changes here. This channel keeps the split we agreed.

Keep the candle lit.

Hello Archivists,

Thank you for voting on the Curator. 170 of you had your say, so here is what I am doing with it.

Two videos a week narrated by me, one from him. The plan is me on Monday, the Curator on Wednesday, me again on Friday. This week is the exception: he lands on Friday.

On the poll itself, it was close. 43% of you said keep it just me, and that was the biggest single answer, so it has shaped the split. Nearly everyone else wanted some version of a mix, and most of them wanted me carrying more of it than him. One video a week from him is the honest middle of that.

The other change is that I want to start theming the weeks. Instead of the videos jumping from subject to subject, each week will hold together around one idea. This week is mental asylums. Next week is alchemy.

As always, tell me what you think of it. This channel is as much yours as mine.

Keep the candle lit.

The Midnight Archives

Hello Archivists,

For a while now a lot of you have been asking me to bring the AI narration back. I've wanted to. What I couldn't work out was how to do it in a way that felt honest and didn't put the channel at risk, so rather than rush it I've spent a few months quietly testing.

I think I've got it.

Meet the Curator. He's a character, not a replacement for me. He'll open the videos the way I do on camera and then hand you over to the story. Same research, same standards, same channel. Just a second voice in the room.

The plan, if you're up for it: one video a week from me, one from him.

This is the first one. It goes live tomorrow, but here it is early for anyone who can't wait.

https://youtu.be/iDpd3UtK7NU

Tell me honestly what you make of him. I'd genuinely rather hear it than guess. This channel is as much yours as mine and your feedback is what shapes it.

Les Misรฉrables lands Friday.

What's the right mix going forward?

The Midnight Archives

Hey everyone ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

First off I owe you an apology for the delays. Truth is, I've been stuck in a bit of analysis paralysis with the scripts. I've reworked a few of them more times than I'd like to admit and still wasn't happy with them, so rather than rushing out videos I'm not proud of, I'm fixing them up properly as I get them out.

Now, the plan going forward:

๐Ÿ“… At least 2 high-quality videos a week โ€”> most likely Mondays and Fridays

๐ŸŒ™ One fiction โ€”> werewolves, witches, the dark origins of fairy tales...

๐Ÿฉธ One dark story from history โ€”> Vlad the Impaler, Elizabeth Bรกthory, the Salem witch trials...

This week will be a one-video week: this Friday I'm releasing "The 10 Most Feared Women in History." Then from Monday, we're back to at least two a week.

Thanks for your patience and for sticking around the archives are only getting darker from here. ๐ŸŒ™

Quick update on what's coming up

for the next few weeks its going to be one video a week rather than the usual pace. two reasons. first I'm going to be away on holiday for a bit at the start of July. second im trying out a few new things with the videos and im still working out exactly how I want to do it, so theyre taking a little longer to put together while I get it right

on the poll, thank you to everyone who voted. it was close enough that im going to do a bit of both. im going to remake the older videos but take them deeper and darker in the new format, and ill also be setting up a separate channel with all the original videos left completely untouched. ill share that second channel a bit later, after my appeal goes through, just because i dont want to risk anything affecting it while thats still in motion

new videos will be going out on fridays from now on

last thing. because ive taken down a lot of the old videos the view count has dropped off quite a bit, which is expected.

so for the time being im going to lean into the more popular topics to rebuild things back up. once its settled again ill start working the more obscure stuff back in too, theres a lot of it i still want to get to

more soon

A note from behind the curtain๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

A heads up, my fellow Archivists you'll see a lot of older videos disappear over the next few weeks. Everything before the Phantom of the Opera video is being unlisted (not deleted) before the 6th of July, and I'm starting now.

Why? I'm in the middle of a monetization appeal, and the older material is what's tripping the "inauthentic content" flag holding everything up. Clearing it out gives the channel the cleanest shot at getting sorted. Housekeeping, not a funeral.

But those videos aren't lost I've got two ways to bring them back, and I want your vote:

A) Move them to a new home channel, kept forever as they are (this waits until the appeal's settled won't risk it before then).

B) Remake them in the new format: deeper, darker, properly polished.

Vote below ๐Ÿ‘‡

And one more thing no video today. I had one in the works, but partway through I realized the script had started to feel like a lecture rather than a story, which isn't what we're here for.

I've fixed it now, but I was running a bit low after that, so rather than force out something half-finished I'm aiming to have it ready for Friday. Quality over a rushed upload, always.

Thank you for your patience while I get the house in order.

Keep the candle lit. ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

40,000. Thank you.

I know the channel has been in a weird place lately and you've been patient with it.

The rebuild is going well, the reapplication is on track, and I feel better about what's coming than I have in a while.

More to come very soon. ๐Ÿ–ค

The Midnight Archives

Hey everyone,
I want to be upfront with you my appeal to get the channel remonetised was unfortunately unsuccessful.

The exact reasoning is a bit vague, but reading between the lines, it seems to be connected to some of my older videos that are still live on the channel. I have another chance to appeal in 90 days, so here's my plan.

Over the coming weeks, I'm going to be slowly phasing out the older videos and remaking the ones that deserve a second life. Not all of them some topics didn't land the way I'd hoped and I'd rather leave them behind. But the ones worth revisiting? I'm rewriting them from scratch. New scripts, new research, new depth. So even if you've watched the originals, there should be plenty in the new versions that feels fresh.

If you've seen the remade Roanoke video, that's the kind of treatment I'll be giving the upcoming remakes.

What this means for you: I'm aiming to put out 2 videos a week one completely new topic and one remake of an older video. First up, I'm aiming to have a remade version of the dark stories behind nursery rhymes ready for Friday.

It's not the news I was hoping to share, but honestly I'm looking at it as an opportunity. The channel has come a long way since some of those early uploads, and I'd rather the library reflect the standard we're at now.

If there are any older videos you'd particularly love to see remade, let me know in the comments that'll help me decide what to prioritise.

Thanks for sticking around. More to come very soon.

The votes are in and honestly it couldn't have been closer.

Roanoke and Biblically Accurate Angels were locked at 30% each, but Roanoke held the lead for longer before Angels caught up at the end so that's the one we're going with first.

Here's the order:
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Roanoke โ€”> The Colony That Vanished
๐Ÿ‘ผ Biblically Accurate Angels โ€”> They Were Never Beautiful
๐Ÿช† Annabelle โ€”> The Real Story Behind the World's Most Haunted Doll
๐Ÿ’€ The Dancing Plague of 1518 โ€”> They Danced Until They Died

The voiceover is already recorded for all 4. So I need to do the rest of the editing now on all 4.

On a separate note some of you have already found The Midnight Vault, my second channel. If you haven't yet, here's the link:

www.youtube.com/channel/UCPe1...

If you enjoy the Archives, the Vault is the darker companion this is where the classified files live.

Government programmes they ran on their own people. Cover-ups that went all the way to the top. The history that was deliberately buried. Five videos already up and what's coming next goes even deeper the families that bought governments, the places that should never have been built, and the conspiracy theories that turn out to be far more disturbing when you strip away the fiction and look at what's actually documented. New files dropping regularly.

The reason I built it (the second channel) is simple I've always been just as curious about what's happening around us as I am about what happened in the past. And the more I dug, the more I kept finding stories about people and institutions in power that I couldn't just sit on. Some of this history isn't ancient, some of it shaped the world we're living in right now and that felt like something worth sharing.

Right now the videos sit at 10-15 minutes while I find the right style and format. As I scale they'll grow into the longer deep dives similar to what this channel is known for (probably to around the 30 min mark with the fast paced edits that are currently on the second channel).

And just to be clear this changes nothing here. The Midnight Archives is still making longform content and that's not going anywhere.

The Vault is an addition, not a replacement.

I'll be dropping another poll soon just polishing up some scripts I've been working on. But if there's something specific you've been wanting to see covered, drop it in the comments below and I'll see if I can get to work on it.

The Archives runs on your curiosity as much as mine. ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

Hey everyone ๐ŸŒ™

The Cleopatra video is going to be a couple of days later than planned won't be able to get it finished today. Been dealing with some stuff behind the scenes on the channel that I'll be filling you in on soon.

She's worth the wait though. See you very soon.
