Founded in 1989 by John Rodaz, and later joined by Maria Rodaz, Area Stage had been a pioneering force in Miami Beach’s arts community. The critically acclaimed nonprofit has produced a diverse range of contemporary and classic works, earning over 150 accolades, including 80+ Carbonell Award nominations and “Best Theater Company” titles from Miami New Times. National outlets like CNN and Univision have recognized its impact.
In 2008, the company moved into the Riviera Theatre in Coral Gables, expanding its mission to include a professional-level conservatory and, in 2014, launching ITP: A Neurodiverse Performing Arts Program for individuals with developmental disabilities. After relocating to the Sunset Place Mall in 2020, Area Stage established a new home with studios and a black box theatre.
Now under Artistic Director Giancarlo Rodaz, the company has embraced immersive productions and forged partnerships with the Arsht Center, Disney Theatricals, and others.
