For our friends of many nations around the world who may not be familiar with the holiday, we wanted to share a short explanation of what Thanksgiving is and why many Americans celebrate it.

American Thanksgiving traces its roots to the early 1600s when English settlers, often called Pilgrims, gathered with members of the Wampanoag tribe for a communal harvest meal after a difficult first year in the New World. While the historical story is more complex than the simplified version often taught, the heart of the tradition has remained the same for many Americans. It is a day to give thanks to God, to express gratitude for blessings, and to gather with family, friends, and community.

The modern holiday officially became a national celebration in 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November as a national day of Thanksgiving. He did this in the middle of the American Civil War with the hope that a shared day of gratitude would help bring comfort and healing to a nation torn apart by conflict. Lincoln encouraged Americans to pause, reflect, give thanks to God, and seek unity during one of the most painful moments in the country’s history.

Today, Thanksgiving continues to carry those themes of gratitude, reflection, and togetherness. Families and friends gather for a shared meal, often including turkey, vegetables, and seasonal dishes, and many take time to express what they are thankful for. Expats and travelers often recreate the holiday wherever they are, sometimes blending traditions with people from around the world.

We’ve got a special re-release for you today. A while back, we posted a video about Slovakia, and, well… let’s just say it was one of our biggest flops. Practically no one watched it, so we took it down.

But recently, several of you have been asking about that video. Turns out, some of you were curious after all!

Julie decided it was worth giving it another chance. She’s re-edited the video so it’s not giving incorrect conversions etc. So, for those of you who missed it the first time around, here’s your chance to check it out.

Quick note: Don’t be confused by the summertime vibes in the video—we’re still here in Montenegro enjoying the colder season. This was filmed during our Slovakia Summer time adventures.

Why Americans Shouldn’t Let Healthcare Fears Hold Them Back from Exploring the World

Many Americans hesitate to move or travel abroad, fearing the healthcare quality won’t match what they’re used to at home. However, there’s a growing disconnect between perceptions and reality. America, despite its enormous spending on healthcare, is seeing its life expectancy ranking fall—poised to be overtaken by countries like China if current trends continue. Meanwhile, countries that spend far less on healthcare are often seeing better outcomes, and much of this has to do with different approaches to health and wellness.

One thing that surprises people when they consider international medical coverage, like what I offer, is that it’s usually much less expensive than U.S. plans. This isn’t because the quality is lower—it’s simply that many countries emphasize cost-effective treatments and preventive care. For example, it’s common to see doctors abroad recommending diet changes, natural remedies, and lifestyle adjustments before rushing to prescribe medications. For many, the simple act of stepping outside the U.S. leads to better health outcomes thanks to less stress and a different approach to care.

This is something we’ve experienced firsthand. We have coverage for wherever we travel and live abroad, and if a major health issue arises, we have no intention of returning to the U.S. for treatment. In fact, if something goes wrong while we’re in America, our plan is to head overseas for care! Healthcare costs abroad can be remarkably affordable, even for high-quality services. Moving abroad can bring substantial savings on both healthcare and health insurance—often one of the biggest cost reductions people notice.

For those looking at international plans, remember you can choose options that include or exclude the U.S., with U.S.-inclusive plans generally costing more. And, importantly, if you’re an American over 65 with Medicare, it’s crucial to keep that coverage if there’s any chance you’ll want to live back in the States again someday. Dropping Medicare permanently increases premiums when you re-enroll.

So, don’t let fears about healthcare hold you back from exploring the world. High-quality care is available globally, often at a fraction of the U.S. cost. The world has a lot to offer, and for those ready to embrace it, healthcare should be the least of their worries. On our channel we want to share real life experiences, we won’t regurgitate articles someone else wrote about Costa Rica, Thailand, or Georgia countries we haven’t personally experienced pretending to be experts on the country. So we are requesting any Expats, Slow Travelers, Nomads, etc that have a quality of life and cost of living story to share to share it on our channel. We would need an 8 to 12 minute video that you would produce & provide to us. We will interview you so that we can produce an intro and outro for the video. Your videos must be music free to avoid copyright claims. This is voluntary and not paid, we don’t make that much from YouTube.
