Soul drenched vocals and jazz harmonies collide with tape delays and echo chambers, underpinned by a rhythm section as comfortable laying down a throbbing, techy soundscape as they are a swampy blues stomp. It’s a potent mixture of virtuosity and diaphragm-wrecking digital sonics.

An exhibition showcasing the making of Based On A True Story is opening at Te Waka Huia o Ngā Taonga Tuku Iho Wellington Museum this month. The music, art, people and places that shaped our landmark album are being celebrated by the waterfront museum in Based On A True Story the 20th Anniversary Exhibition, 22 November to 8 March 2026.
"It really feels like a high-five to the Wellington music scene and the city as a whole” Chopper Reeds says.
We've dug deep for BOATS era taonga for the exhibition. MU's MPC 2000 and Fulla Flash's 'Bessie' sax, the fish 'n' chip menu board from the Wandering Eye music video set, original stencils, stamps, photos, posters, videos, black books and Hopepa's All-Star yellow tracksuit all made the cut. Entry to the Pōneke based exhibition is by Koha. Check the link for info, and get in quick for two special public programme events. For those who can't make it in person, hold tight, we'll step out of the rush and share some of the highlights online. Arohanui.
