Soul drenched vocals and jazz harmonies collide with tape delays and echo chambers, underpinned by a rhythm section as comfortable laying down a throbbing, techy soundscape as they are a swampy blues stomp. It’s a potent mixture of virtuosity and diaphragm-wrecking digital sonics.

The event showcasing strength and unity in Pacific music acknowledged MU as one of the coolest people in New Zealand music. “We honour and thank him – for the gift of creativity and music and his legacy of beautiful music” Makerita Urale, Senior Manager Pacific Arts says. Mia, MU and Nicole’s daughter, and cousin Lale, accepted the award on his behalf. “Fat Freddy’s Drop has helped pave the way for independent music here in Aotearoa. What’s cooking in the kitchen? We’ve been slamming handcrafted Cevichán Habanero Salsa on our kai, a gift from Román Pérez who makes the salsa in Sweden using recipes from his family back in Mexico.
