All, I am happy to announce that I will be giving OP Workshop's first presentation on the history of HDTV and computing technology at this year's Vintage Computer Festival Midwest (VCFMW) at the Schaumburg Convention Center, Illinois, USA on Sept. 13th at 8PM. For those unaware, OP Workshop is Reely Interesting's community & spin-off for original content.

Together, we'll learn why HDTV was never meant to be HDTV, what the 360lb Sony HDD-1000 digital HD video tape recorder shares in common with a home CD player, how the first commercial HDTV transmission system (MUSE) works (in a way that you won't forget), and more. Featured will be never-before-heard stories from industry professionals who worked with early HDTV hardware, along with rare clips of early HDTV productions. All this will conclude with a showing of the world's first CG short produced especially for HDTV...which hasn't been publicly shown since SIGGRAPH '85!

VCFMW is the largest gathering of retro computer enthusiasts and vendors in the Midwest USA. Every time I've attended, I've interacted with some very rare hardware, met wonderful people (including tech YouTubers like 8-Bit Guy & Adrian's Digital Basement), learned about technologies of all eras, and bought home tons of vintage hardware at great prices. 2025 is turning out to be an interesting year with so many new things happening at Reely Interesting!
2025年は、「Reely Interesting」で多くの新しいことが起こる、興味深い年になりそうだ！

In May, I uploaded the first uncompressed digital HD video from the amazing Sony HDD-1000 video tape recorder. That upload only showed part of the amazing hardware to you. This month's upload explores one more unique feature of the HDD-1000, multi-channel audio! In addition to uncompressed 1035i HD, the HDD-1000 could store up to 8 tracks of uncompressed, 48kHz audio. This could be used for storing multiple microphone feeds, or multiple program languages, or, in this case, it was used for a multi-channel surround sound audio! This week's upload, "Panasonic's Adventures In Audiana" features a discrete 4.1 channel soundtrack which was processed & adapted to YouTube's 5.1 surround sound specifications. This means that if you watch the video on devices such as an Apple TV, Google TV, Nvidia Shield, many Roku devices, and other modern YouTube-compatible devices made for home theater use, you can experience the original surround sound audio track on your 5.1-compatible sound system! Be sure to check it out if you can!

This month also introduces the results of a project that I've been working on for a long time. Next week, I'll be posting our first VHD capture using a brand-new process. VHD discs are notoriously hard to capture for a multitude of reasons, including unusual time-base instability which affects the ability to use many of the usual high-quality capture devices. I've been through dozens of devices to determine the process which can provide the best balance between high-quality picture and good image stability and I think I finally found it. While the video I originally hoped to post this month, could not be posted and the scheduled video doesn't really show off the process, I hope you'll find it is still significantly better than previous VHD uploads.

Finally, I've been gathering A LOT of new materials lately. So many, in fact, that it would take years to post them all at the current rate! So, in addition to the usual uploads every Thursday, there will be more "bonus" uploads on random weekends. In addition, instead of posting "special" uploads only on the first Thursday of the month or only during events, I'll now be posting 2 "special" uploads per month! So expect many additional exciting uploads this month and over the course of future months and be sure to hit the notification icon so you never miss an upload!

Check out this very cool piece of Disney & HDTV history which we were able to capture!

A member of the EPCOT Future World historical emulation group, FuturePort '82, recently got a hold of me and said they found a reel of 1" video tape which was marked "EPCOT Spaceship Earth HD clone." Suspecting that it was an actual HD tape, they reached out to me at the OP Workshop and wondered if I might have the hardware to playback the tape.
EPCOTの歴史グループ、FuturePort '82のメンバーから最近連絡があり、「EPCOT Spaceship Earth HD clone 」と書かれた1インチのビデオテープを見つけたという。実際のHDテープではないかと疑った彼らは、OP Workshopの私に連絡を取り、そのテープを再生するハードウェアがあるかどうか尋ねてきました。

I was able to confirm that it was indeed an 1" digital HDTV master tape from 1994, and, after they sent the tape to me, I was able to use my recently-obtained Sony HDD-1000 to reveal the special contents! The tape contains the master CG footage loop for the "Virtual Classroom" segment of the EPCOT "Spaceship Earth" ride as was used from 1994 until 2007.

After the 2007 reworking of "Spaceship Earth," this segment was eliminated from the ride and, with the exception of poor consumer camcorder recordings, was considered lost. Now, I'm very happy to share that the footage has been captured in uncompressed HD and is now available for viewing as never before by all on YouTube.
2007年の「宇宙船地球号」のリニューアル後、このセグメントはライドから削除され、民生用ビデオカメラの録画の悪さを除いては、失われたものと思われていた。この度、この映像が非圧縮HDで撮影され、YouTubeで誰でも今までにない形で見ることができるようになったことを大変嬉しく思う。

I'm so excited!!! It's almost May! If you've been following Reely Interesting for a while, you may know what this means. To those who are new, May is Reely Interesting's May-versary where we celebrate the rebooting of the channel in May 2020.

That's right; it's been 5 years since we uploaded the HDVS production, Okinawa Underwater. Since then, not only have we discovered, captured, and uploaded an incredible amount of rare and previously-lost footage, but we have continuously refined our capture and processing workflow to bring you some of the highest-quality vintage video footage available on YouTube.

After 5 years of near-daily efforts and an incredible world-wide journey, I am proud to announce that we have a beautiful, functional example of the world's first digital HDTV video tape recorder in our possession, the Sony HDD-1000. This feat of engineering was developed in 1987 and is capable of storing 1.2 Gbps of uncompressed 1035i video to special 11.75"-diameter open reels of 1"-wide metal tape. From this format, we'll be uploading not 1...but 5 very special videos sourced from the HDD-1000 this May-versery!

しかし、それだけではありません！今月はもうひとつの新しいHDTVフォーマットをご紹介します。世界初のデジタル・ハイビジョン・ビデオテープ・レコーダー、ソニーHDD-1000の美しく機能的な実物を手に入れたのです。この偉業は1987年に開発され、1.2Gbpsの非圧縮1035iビデオを直径11.75インチの特殊なオープンリール（幅1インチのメタルテープ）に保存することができる。このフォーマットから、今年の5月にHDD-1000から取り出した1本...ではなく5本の特別なビデオをアップロードする予定だ！

It doesn't even stop there! Behind the scenes, we've collaborated with generous folks involved with some of these productions, and we're happy to announce that two of the digitally-perfect HDD-1000 captures will be available free to download in the raw uncompressed 1035i form and free to use for non-commercial purposes via the OP Workshop Internet Archive account. This is a huge step for us towards our ultimate goal of archiving as much important lost media as possible in an accessible way that can be enjoyed by everyone.

I'm excited to announce that a scan of the only known service manual for the JVC Victor HR-W1 W-VHS VCR is now freely available on the OP Workshop Internet Archive account. We used our high-quality document scanners and special wide-format scanners to archive the manual in the highest fidelity possible. This was made possible in part due to the generous submission of the manual to us by fellow early HDTV archivist, ‪@keoliaCC‬ .

Two months in a row of new HDTV formats???

Last month, we released the first known high-quality YouTube upload from the very rare UNIHI HDTV video cassette format. It took three years of on-off work to get the deck to output an acceptable picture. A true labor of love, and I'm so glad that you all have enjoyed the first upload so much! We will have plenty more UNIHI content coming in the following months.

Today's upload marks the release of footage from another new format. This format is one that almost all of you are familiar with...or it only seems so at first glance! The truth is this is another obscure format under a surprisingly familiar name. As we've seen many times on this channel, sometimes it has taken even the largest companies a couple iterations of major tweaking to make a product consumer-ready. Be sure to tune in at 5PM CDT, and I hope that you'll find it to be a reely curious piece of history as I did.

As always, these uploads keep coming because you all keep asking for them! Behind the scenes, we've been working tirelessly to find curious hardware, repair it, and dig up the most obscure content to go with it, and we have so much more that we want to share and do with you, our lovely viewers, both on and outside YouTube.

It has recently come to my attention that there have been a couple services online which have been using our uploads in their entirety, sometimes including our thumbnails and elements of our descriptions too, to promote their own for-profit services or their own promotions. They also may or may not credit Reely Interesting in such a manner that it appears we could be collaborating with them. I am not the only channel/uploader affected, as these services are exploiting many channels with "unusual vintage content" like mine in order to bolster their offerings and boost their online profile.

I'd like to make it clear that, as of August 2024, we have no collaborations or uploads with any other streaming services than YouTube, especially paid subscription services. In addition, we will /never/ force anyone to watch Reely Interesting videos behind a paywall. The only other authorized location to find Reely Interesting videos in the future will be our spin-off OP Workshop's Internet Archive account for specific historically important footage.

Reely Interesting has always been a passion project to bring ignored, out-of-print, abandoned, and otherwise lost footage into the light in an accessible way. These uploads are here not to make a profit, and we've tried to support & respond to the original creators through a number of means. The exploitive nature of these services are discouraging to the folks such as myself who have put in a lot of resources to find and recover this footage.

If you see such a service with Reely Interesting's videos, please do not support them.

If you own one of these services or plan to open one of these services, don't be lazy & don't hurt the community that gave you this opportunity. Find & capture your own footage.

I feel SUPER happy that you all are as into this content and material as I am. Thank you all so much for tuning in to my uploads (especially those of you who tune in every week), and thanks for being a part of Reely Interesting! When I restarted this channel I had hoped that I'd maybe gather a couple hundred folks that had the same fascination with analog HDTV, background video, Japanese concerts, etc as me...and boy, did I underestimate the future!
皆さんも私と同じように、私のアナログビデオを使ったコンテンツに夢中になってくれているようで、とても嬉しく思っています。僕のアップロードにチャンネルを合わせてくれて本当にありがとう（特に毎週チャンネルを合わせてくれている皆さん）そして「REELY INTERESTING」の一員でいてくれてありがとう！このチャンネルを再開したとき、アナログハイビジョンテレビ、BGV、日本のコンサートなど、私と同じような魅力を持つ人たちが数百人集まればいいなと思っていたのですが、私はその数をかなり過小評価していました！

It appears that you all liked it so we'll be queuing up more odd travel-related videos on the Video8 format over the next few months.

First of all, it's May again. That means it's time for the Reely Interesting May-Versary! If you're unfamiliar with May-Versary, every year since we rebooted this channel in May 2020, we celebrate our wonderful viewers such as you who have made this channel possible. This year, we'll be doubling the number of released videos to at least 2 per week...

This month will also kick off the start of our NewTek Video Toaster uploads. The Video Toaster was an incredibly popular hardware for affordable professional video editing & effects that revolutionized the middle-end video production business in the 1990s. This month, we'll be uploading never before seen training videos featuring behind-the-scenes interviews with much of the staff behind the original Video Toaster such as Paul Montgomery.
