Hi everyone! About three weeks ago, we hit 20,000 subscribers!

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all for you love and support over all these years. When it comes down to it, this channel was built from my own passions in order to share them with what I thought was the few other like-minded retro media enjoyers. So when I rebooted this in 2020, I never thought that this would reach such a large number of equally
passionate people.
この場をお借りして、長年にわたる皆さんの温かいご声援とご支援に心から感謝申し上げます。結局のところ、このチャンネルは、私と同じようなレトロメディア愛好家（当時はごく少数だと思っていました）と共有したいという思いから、私の情熱が形になったものです。ですから、2020年にこのチャンネルを再始動させた際、これほど多くの、私と同じくらい情熱的な人々に届くとは夢にも思いませんでした。

Over the years, I've also learned so much from many of you, and I hope you all have seen this reflected in the new technologies, enhanced quality, and unusual & obscure formats which have been in continuous addition & improvement. This has entirely been possible because of you: the wonderful, intelligent, generous, & patient(!) hobbyists, industry professionals, curious minds, and generally awesome people who I've met online & in-person.

So besides this post, what will I be doing to celebrate the big 20k? Not much... However, sometime in late September I hope to revive the OP Workshop Twitch account where you can watch me & learn how I perform repairs and modifications on this equipment and maybe also say hi and chat about things! Of course, if you want to participate with me, I have a very active Discord and (much less active) social media accounts where you can see all the cool things I and others in the community are doing! You can also become a "Wire" (Ko-Fi/Patreon supporter) and help keep the lights on and tape heads spinning! This upcoming month, I'm going to continue with the fun by introducing another new format, D-VHS!
来月も、この楽しさを続けて、新たなフォーマット「D-VHS」をご紹介します！

Introduced by JVC in 1997, D-VHS (AKA "Digital VHS" or "Data VHS") was a modification of the VHS format for the nascent digital TV age. Capable of recording raw data streams from satellite, cable, or over-the-air TV, this tape format could record and playback "lossless" digital TV!
1997年にJVCが発表したD-VHS（別名「デジタルVHS」または「データVHS」）は、デジタルテレビ時代が幕を開けようとしていた時期に、VHSフォーマットを改良したものです。衛星放送、ケーブルテレビ、地上波テレビからの生データストリームを記録できるこのテープフォーマットは、「ロスレス」なデジタルテレビの録画・再生が可能でした！


Since this format was available since the earliest digital TV deployments, D-VHS tapes can provides some of the highest quality views into early digital standard definition and high definition TV. Starting this month, ReelyInteresting will be bringing you some of these early transmissions along with some promotional releases from this very special format.
このフォーマットはデジタルテレビの初期導入時から利用可能だったため、D-VHSテープは初期のデジタル標準画質および高画質テレビの映像を最高品質で鑑賞できる手段となります。今月から、「ReelyInteresting」では、この非常に特別なフォーマットによる初期の放送映像やプロモーション用リリースをお届けしていきます。

Hi everyone! This month we're introducing a new, much requested format, U-Matic!

みなさん、こんにちは！今月は、多くの方からご要望をいただいていた新しいフォーマット、「U-Matic」をご紹介します！

Released around 1971, U-Matic was the first successful video cassette format and was used for over 40 years in professional, broadcast, and even home environments around the world.

1971年頃に発売されたU-Maticは、初めて成功を収めたビデオカセットフォーマットであり、40年以上にわたり、世界中のプロフェッショナル分野や放送業界、さらには家庭でも広く使用されてきました。

I've been able to add many U-Matic tapes to the ReelyInteresting archive over the years, but it has always been difficult & expensive to obtain and maintain high-quality hardware.

私は長年にわたり、ReelyInterestingのアーカイブに多くのU-Maticテープを追加してきましたが、高品質なハードウェアを入手し、維持することは常に困難で費用もかかっていました。

Now, with the Domesday-Decoder-derived, open-source VHS-Decode software & hardware modifications, I've been able to use lightweight and easily-maintainable hardware to perform captures of U-Matic tapes from around the world in exceptional quality!

しかし今回、「Domesday-Decoder」を基にしたオープンソースの「VHS-Decode」ソフトウェアとハードウェアの改造により、軽量でメンテナンスしやすいハードウェアを用いて、世界中のU-Maticテープを極めて高い画質でキャプチャできるようになりました！

The first U-Matic upload is from a tape I've been wanting to share for over 10 years. In 1994, Ameritech (a division of AT&T) commissioned a series of 6 music videos for internal campaigns. These never-before-seen videos will be released over the course of July!

今月の最初のU-Maticアップロードは、私が10年以上も前から公開したかったテープからのものです。1994年、Ameritech（AT&Tの部門）は社内キャンペーン用に6本のミュージックビデオシリーズを制作しました。これまでに公開されたことのないこれらの映像を、7月中に順次公開していきます！

みなさん、こんにちは！「May-Versary 2026」を楽しんでいただけたでしょうか？何か新しい発見はありましたか？

Just because May is over doesn't mean the fun is over. Quite the opposite, in fact. We're going to be kicking off this June with an incredibly special video. This video was only rumored to exist until recently when a copy was discovered.

5月が終わったからといって、楽しみが終わったわけではありません。むしろその逆です。6月は、とびきり特別な動画で幕を開けます。この動画は、つい最近まで存在が噂されるだけでしたが、ついに1本が発見されました。

The JVC-Victor video format called "VHD" was a competing format to LaserDisc and used a needle to read video off of a 10" vinyl disc. The format was released in Japan in mid-1983 and lived a moderately successful life for a number of years; however, it was also originally planned for a USA release. Some of you may know that these plans proceeded so far that a VHD factory was opened in the USA and actually started pressing discs before the launch was cancelled. A few YouTubers have posted footage from some of the prototype discs that were pressed in 1983 and retained by the original engineers, including me (see my "You're The Coach! Feat. Tom Harmon" upload).

「VHD」と呼ばれるJVCビクターのビデオフォーマットは、レーザーディスクと競合する規格で、10インチのビニールディスクから針を使って映像を読み取るものでした。このフォーマットは1983年半ばに日本で発売され、数年間はそこそこの成功を収めましたが、当初は米国での発売も計画されていました。ご存知の方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、この計画は、発売が中止される前に、米国にVHD工場が開設され、実際にディスクのプレスが始まるほどまで進んでいたのです。数人のYouTuberが、1983年にプレスされ、当時のエンジニアたち（私を含め）が保管していたプロトタイプディスクの映像を投稿しています（私の「You're The Coach! Feat. Tom Harmon」のアップロードをご覧ください）。

The VHD system, however, had been shown in various functional states at trade shows staring in the late 1970's as the format matured and was originally expected to launch in 1981. Due to various issues with disc manufacturing, this launch date was continuously delayed, yet, test discs continued to be created.

しかし、VHDシステムはフォーマットが成熟するにつれ、1970年代後半から様々な機能状態のものが展示会などで公開されており、当初は1981年の発売が予定されていました。ディスク製造における様々な問題により、この発売日は繰り返し延期されましたが、テスト用ディスクの作成は続けられていました。

I am proud to announce that I have obtained an American prototype VHD demo from June 1981, nearly two years before the launch of the format in Japan. Intended for show at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 1981 (the same year the CD was announced), this disc is currently the earliest known disc pressed in the VHD format. The best part? It plays in the newer production players.

日本でのフォーマット発売の約2年前にあたる1981年6月製の、米国版VHDプロトタイプデモディスクを入手できたことを、誇りを持ってご報告いたします。1981年のコンシューマー・エレクトロニクス・ショー（CES）での展示を目的としていたこのディスクは、現在確認されている中で最も古いVHDフォーマットプレス盤です。そして何より素晴らしいのは、最新の量産型プレーヤーでも再生可能だということです。

As a result, our first video of June will be footage from this prototype disc, showing never before seen footage of prototype players and a complete, uncut demonstration of the VHD technology which was only partially available in Japanese before. The disc is in rough condition, and it unfortunatley shows in the quality of the capture. However, there are opportunities to improve the capture of the disc. Once performed, a full capture of the disc will be made and will be uploaded to the OP Workshop Internet Archive as a historically important artifact.

その結果、6月の最初の動画は、この試作ディスクからの映像となります。これには、試作プレーヤーの未公開映像や、これまで日本では一部しか公開されていなかったVHD技術の完全な未編集デモが収録されています。ディスクの状態は悪く、残念ながらその影響がキャプチャ画質にも表れています。しかし、ディスクのキャプチャ画質を改善する余地はあります。作業が完了次第、ディスクの完全なキャプチャを作成し、歴史的に重要な資料としてOP Workshopインターネットアーカイブにアップロードする予定です。

It's been 6 years and 6 May-Versaries now. If you weren't here last year, we uploaded a new every 2-3 days for the entire week of May. I'm happy to announce that we'll be doing that again this year... Except this year, we'll have a theme. All videos will be "how-to & instructional" since we all could benefit from learning something new!

I also used this opportunity to learn a new technology which will help ReelyInteresting capture and restore even more precious recordings. ReelyInteresting has now added the incredible Domesday Duplicator to our arsenal of capture facilities. The Domesday Duplicator is an open-source alternative capture method which allows us to capture the raw analog RF signal off of analog disc or tape media, bypassing the original decoding hardware in the device and allowing superior decoding with modern techniques in software.

また、この機会を利用して、ReelyInterestingがさらに多くの貴重な記録をキャプチャ・復元するのに役立つ新技術を習得しました。ReelyInterestingは、キャプチャ設備のラインナップに、驚異的な「Domesday Duplicator」を追加しました。「Domesday Duplicator」は、オープンソースの代替キャプチャ手法です。これにより、アナログディスクやテープメディアから生のアナログRF信号を直接キャプチャし、デバイス内の元のデコードハードウェアをバイパスして、ソフトウェア上の最新技術による優れたデコードが可能になります。

One of the major benefits of the Domesday Decoder is that RF captures can be "stacked." This allows multiple copies of the same disc/tape to be separately capture & combined to create a virtual "super disc/tape." This can be used to remove inherent random flaws of analog mediums such as noise, but, more importantly, it can also be used to recover defective or decaying recordings or pressings as never before.

ReelyInteresting's first video this month will feature a very special 1984 LaserDisc featuring never-before-seen footage of a little-documented technology that revolutionized computing interfaces. The footage came from four identical sides of two LaserDiscs with incredibly heavy "laser rot" that made the footage unwatchable. With the Domesday Duplicator's stacking abilities, the video was nearly perfectly recovered and is now some of the highest-quality footage I've seen from laserdisc.

I might have a new format coming soon...but I need your help to make it happen!

I'm looking for a disc caddy and/or machine for the McDonnell Douglas/Sansui Laserfilm system.
I've managed to obtain one of the only known discs left in existence; however, there were hundreds of machines and accessories which were practically given away as deadstock/scrap by McDonnell-Douglas about 25 years ago.

If you have or someone you know has any hardware for this format, please reach out via the contact info on my About page/Linktree. Hopefully, we can digitize this footage and let the world see Laserfilm for the first time!

I've been scanning discontinued & unavailable service manuals for the past few months and have uploaded nearly 100 service manuals which are free to access by anyone on my Internet Archive account. This is the result of more than 5 years of searching around the world for materials!

ここ数ヶ月、廃盤・入手困難なサービスマニュアルをスキャンし続け、インターネットアーカイブのアカウントに約100冊のサービスマニュアルをアップロードしました。これらは誰でも無料でアクセス可能です。これは5年以上にわたり世界中で資料を探し続けた成果です！

The main focus of the scans is Sony's early HD gear (HDVS) of which I've been able to obtain and scan about 75% of the service manuals for the commercially available equipment. Some of the uploads include service manuals for the original Sony HDV-1000 1" analog HD VTR and most of the "2nd generation hardware" such as the Sony HDD-1000 digital HDVS VTR, Sony HDC-300 HD tube camera, Sony HDC-500 CCD camera, and much more.
スキャンの主な対象はソニーの初期HD機器（HDVS）であり、市販機器のサービスマニュアルの約75％を入手・スキャンすることができました。アップロードされた資料には、オリジナルのソニーHDV-1000 1インチアナログHDビデオテープレコーダーのサービスマニュアルや、ソニーHDD-1000デジタルHDVSビデオテープレコーダー、ソニーHDC-300 HDチューブカメラ、ソニーHDC-500 CCDカメラなど「第2世代ハードウェア」の大半が含まれています。

I also have uploaded some service manuals for important standard definition gear such as the Sony EV-S7000 Hi8 deck, Sony DVR-1000 D-1 deck, and, in a few days, I'll have some scans for the Sony BVH-2500 & BVH-3100 1" Type C decks.
また、ソニー EV-S7000 Hi8デッキやソニー DVR-1000 D-1デッキなど、重要な標準画質機器のサービスマニュアルもアップロードしました。数日後には、ソニー BVH-2500 および BVH-3100 1インチ タイプCデッキのスキャン画像も追加予定です。

All, I am happy to announce that I will be giving OP Workshop's first presentation on the history of HDTV and computing technology at this year's Vintage Computer Festival Midwest (VCFMW) at the Schaumburg Convention Center, Illinois, USA on Sept. 13th at 8PM. For those unaware, OP Workshop is Reely Interesting's community & spin-off for original content.

Together, we'll learn why HDTV was never meant to be HDTV, what the 360lb Sony HDD-1000 digital HD video tape recorder shares in common with a home CD player, how the first commercial HDTV transmission system (MUSE) works (in a way that you won't forget), and more. Featured will be never-before-heard stories from industry professionals who worked with early HDTV hardware, along with rare clips of early HDTV productions. All this will conclude with a showing of the world's first CG short produced especially for HDTV...which hasn't been publicly shown since SIGGRAPH '85!

VCFMW is the largest gathering of retro computer enthusiasts and vendors in the Midwest USA. Every time I've attended, I've interacted with some very rare hardware, met wonderful people (including tech YouTubers like Adrian's Digital Basement), learned about technologies of all eras, and bought home tons of vintage hardware at great prices. So there is no doubt that if you find what I do interesting, are part of the "techtuber" scene, or simply like vintage computing & technologies, you'll absolutely love VCFMW.
