The Delivery
The notification flashed at 2:00 AM: “Your package has been delivered.”
Liam blinked at his phone. He hadn't ordered anything. Not recently, anyway, and certainly not for middle-of-the-night delivery. Probably a system error, he thought, rolling over.
But then he heard it. A faint, almost imperceptible sound from the hallway. A wet scrape, followed by the muffled thud of something heavy settling against his apartment door.
His heart hammered. He crept out of bed, grabbed the heavy fireplace poker—which felt laughably light—and slowly approached the peephole.
The hallway light was out, casting the space in a sickening, deep-blue shadow from the window at the end of the hall. He could only make out a shape pressed against his door: a large, shapeless form wrapped in what looked like heavy-duty moving blankets, tied shut with coarse rope. It was roughly the size and shape of a refrigerator laid on its side.
And that was it. No delivery person. No truck. Just the silent, ominous bundle.
He spent the next five minutes trying to rationalize it—a prank, a misplaced furniture drop, anything but what the creeping dread suggested. Finally, he worked up the nerve. He braced the poker against his shoulder, took a deep breath, and slid the deadbolt open.
He pulled the door inward just a few inches. The smell hit him first: a potent, metallic odor, like pennies and stagnant water. It was far too heavy to push aside. He leaned down, straining to see beneath the blanket-wrapped mass.
The bottom edge of the packaging was stained a dark, glistening black, still spreading slowly onto the carpet. And near the corner, where the rope had been tied a little too tightly, the blanket fabric had pulled taut, revealing the texture beneath.
It wasn’t a package. It was a hollow human body, splayed out like a grim canvas. The black stain was blood.
But that wasn't the shocking part.
The shocking part was the small, pristine white sticker affixed to the very top. It was the familiar label from a popular local delivery service, and written beneath the neatly printed tracking number, in the spot reserved for the recipient’s name, was a single, hand-written word:
"MYSELF."
