In the early hours of March 13, 1964, Kitty Genovese, a 28-year-old bartender, was raped and stabbed outside the apartment building where she lived in the Kew Gardens neighborhood of Queens in New York City, New York, United States
The apparent lack of reaction by numerous neighbors purported to have watched the scene or to have heard Genovese's cries for help, although erroneously reported, prompted research into diffusion of responsibility and the bystander effect.

This study prompted researchers Darley & Latne to conduct experiments on what's known as the Bystander Theory & Diffusion of Responsibility.

Piliavin & Piliavin later conducted the famous Subway Samaritan Experiement, which did not prove the Diffusion of Responsibility or Bystander Theory. There could have been many reasons for this.. #1 reason in my opinion... they were on an enclosed train and could not leave, they either faced an uncomfortable feeling of not helping or they helped... most people helped.
