Hi! I'm Katherine and I worked as a designer reseller for 10 years. My channel, KWSHOPS, was my attempt at bringing the best practical information about the luxury resale market that people like you could use to make informed decisions about your luxury purchases.
...this channel was also an enablement mechanism for my intense shopping addiction. Shopping was my only hobby, and my entire life was centered around it. This relaunch of KWSHOPS is an exploration of consumerism, and a chronicling of my No Buy year!

HeyHey!

No video this week, I’ve been BTS processing and occupying myself elsewhere - anywho, here is a link to a podcast I just listened to this AM that I thought was very insightful. It talks about some of the history of how shopping and consumerism became the national past-time (especially for women)

If you’re trying to get a handle on your shopping- and struggling - it’s not just you. This was something that we were literally socialized into from birth and we are now 3-4 generations into this society-wide change. You’re not going to just magically unlearn and deprogram in a week.

The historian interviewed, Susan Strasser, has been added to my reading list. And I found one of the articles referenced in this episode which will be linked down below.

Again, I’m struggling a bit with making my ideas coherent, so periodically I’m going to have to sit some weeks out!

Currently I’m working on a follow up of the luxury market and why I’ve categorically lost my taste for it, my thoughts on the ‘Personal Style’ Discourse, Why we shop fast fashion in spite of it going against our personal values, and a few other topics If there are any topics you’re interested in, or have any thoughts on these, I’d love to hear about them!

In the meantime here are some podcasts, books, and other Youtube videos I’ve found super insightful this past week

@overalanalyzing - Personal Style is fake https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRuOP... & Microtrend Pintrest Outfits Look Terrible https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRhKm...

Little Bosses Everywhere - How the Pyramid Scheme Shaped America by Bridget Read

Satisfaction: Seeking Novelty And the Science of Finding True Fulfillment

…and of course, my little prince Stella 🐶

Bonus confession: I’ve bought *4* books this month.

Watching the YT algorithm scrape my videos for something to try to sell is COMICAL at this point 🙈 I'm thinking about making it a game -
...anyway, this is one of the videos I'm most proud of. I'm really trying to re-center my thinking about the ideas within the fashion sphere of consumerism that we take for granted as normal. And then attempt to connect these ideas to other beliefs, behaviors or ideologies operating outside of just fashion.
*CHECK OUT THE VIDEO HERE* https://youtu.be/LYNRT12odKg

PS- watch the video to find out why you should ABSOLUTELY NOT buy that damned printer.

As always, thank you all for navigating this with transition with me. I may not always nail it - BUT I think this effort to reframe our mindsets is necessary. ❤️

"shopping should be an *errand*, not a *hobby*."

No new video from me today. I've taken the rest of this week to just sit and *think*. However, I really enjoyed this message from ‪@ashleyaviola‬ . She is one of the **many** creators that has helped open my eyes to the causes and effects of my compulsive shopping behaviors. Coming up I'll make a playlist of videos I've found really useful as well!
Also, the title may say Gen Z but as a '90 millenial - I found it resonated with me perfectly, and the issues she highlights are being experienced by all age groups

Couple of updates:
- I finally finished the last little bit of 2 books, upping the # of books read this year to 16! (see May recap https://youtu.be/SFVlOUtEhaY )
-There have been EXACTLY ZERO DOLLARS of unnecessary spending this week (so far only $60 on produce!)

- I'm working on my ideas around affiliate marketing, AND I'm going to finally show you all the massive arsenal of +50 bottles of conditioner I've had hiding away in my bathroom. 🫣

Hi guys! Just popping in say there won't be an upload today =( I've had huge fluctuations in my schedule and haven't been able to maintain my filming schedule....But the good news is, I will be back with an upload for Tuesday and plan to film this weekend. Below are some ideas I'm pondering for future topics on consumerism, and how we're all hooked on it.
Plz vote on your favorites below, and in the meantime, here's a reminder to go outside if you can. The ads can't follow you if you're not staring into the screen https://youtu.be/P22aFDC1z7w

See you back here Tuesday!!

This is BAR-NONE the quickest turn-around I've ever made on a Youtube video (I hope it doesn't show) Apparently this is exploding over on TT, and I had some thoughts.....
I obv didn't get to everything, but there's a TON more I want to chat about in the future on this topic - Anyway, look out for this video TOMORROW MORNING (April 15th) 10am EST.

By complete coincidence - this is the notification I woke up to this morning ❤️

I think it is truly remarkable that the day I scheduled my brand new “mission statement” for the future and what’s to come here, is the exact day 9 years later that I started sharing my experiences on here in the first place !

So far I'm on track for new videos chronicling my No-Buy on Tuesdays and Fridays! In case you haven't seen my last one, we're unpacking the mindsets that kept me on perpetual quests to spend money. Tomorrow I'm sharing kind of a...mission statement? for the direction of this channel.
See you tomorrow!

I have been OVERWHELMED with the positive reception this pivot for my channel has gotten! I cannot express my appreciation enough, and it feels so good that a lot of you are feeling the same way! Thank you for staying with me through this, and I also want to extend a big hello to those of you who are new!!

The plan for this new direction is post new videos on Tuesdays and Fridays - if you have been with me for a while, in the past 9 YEARS that I've had this channel, I have never been able to keep up with more than 1 video per week, so let's cross our fingers that I'll be able to achieve this goal.

In case you haven't see already, this video is a list of my rules for my No Buy, as well as sharing a few things are still worth it for me to spend on this year (lol I'm not becoming a monk!) And I hope to see you back here for TOMORROW'S video! ❤️

KWSHOP(PED)

This is goodbye. But I'm back!

I’m in an entirely new headspace and want to take a turn away from luxury, away from fashion, and away from consumerism as a whole. In the last decade, I worked in luxury resale, chatted here with you guys, and modeled professionally - this year I’m actually making an effort to do a 'No Buy' challenge for the year, with the intention of re-assessing my passions, purpose, and participation - and I want to ensure that as much of those things actually serve ME.

Make no mistake, I was never buying designer goods as a means of ‘showing off’ or ‘status signaling’ (…and to be clear - I don’t think most anyone that found *my* channel, or the true luxury community more broadly does either!). I genuinely was having fun with collecting these things - to the point where it felt like a part of my identity. But my passion, my zeal, my interest? Gone. Over the years, the market has changed, and I really don’t see that it has anything of substance left to offer. Just shoddy craftsmanship, high prices, and hideous, unflattering designs that give little utility.

After working in a small consignment boutique for years, I started this channel in 2016 because I saw how often consumers were being misled by brands, sales associates, and influencers. I interacted with women who bought Chanel Jumbos at full price - just be shocked later on that in resale they wouldn’t get back exactly what they had paid, saying to me, almost in whimpers: “But, they said it was an investment.” after losing thousands.

My aim here was to share practical knowledge and useful insights directly with consumers so they could make informed purchasing decisions and participate in luxury shopping on their own terms. Respecting anyone’s choice in their participation, while giving my best honest guidance, and potentially bursting a few bubbles in the process.

Unfortunately, I just don’t see an avenue for practical, rational, thoughtful, decision making in this space. As with many commercial industries, the incentive is to just keep everyone in a perpetual compulsive state of buying, and buying, and buying. And, I’m done.

I left the industry professionally in 2023, and it has taken some time and some serious self-reflection and solitude, but I’ve taken stock of my motivations here and it’s time for a hard reset. What I thought was a “love of fashion” - from the luxury resale arena, to shopping fast fashion for the perfect outfit - was just empty consumerism that kept my mind activated but wasted money and cluttered my space.

I sold off all of my Chanel bags, most of my LV, and remain with a couple (…lol 14) designer bags that I love the look and style of - but to be really honest, I don’t use them. And I haven’t really used them in *years.*

I really truly enjoyed this, but it’s time for me to move on. As mentioned, I want to stop shopping, and I want to change the direction of this online space to a place that questions this mindless consumerism and gets us (mostly me!) back to truly thinking about my needs, goals, preferences, and well-being over lining the pockets of businesses that literally mean us harm.

I hope you’ll join me.
