What are Implicit Questions?
Implicit questions do not ask directly.
The answer is hidden in the passage — you must infer, not copy.
👉 Examiners are testing:
• Understanding between the lines
• Ability to interpret tone, motive, attitude, and impact.
Common Implicit Question Types (1123)
1️⃣ Character’s Feelings / Attitude
Question styles:
• What does the writer suggest about…?
• How does the character feel about…?
• What impression do we get of…?
Example:
What impression do we get of Anne in this episode?
✔️ Answer using adjectives + evidence
Anne appears imaginative and enthusiastic, as she eagerly experiments with flavourings despite the risk.
2️⃣ Writer’s Purpose / Intention
Question styles:
• Why does the writer describe…?
• What is the effect of…?
• Why does the writer include this detail?
Tip:
Never say “to make the story interesting” ❌
✔️ Better answers:
• to highlight
• to emphasise
• to contrast
• to show the consequences of
3️⃣ Cause & Effect (Not Stated Directly)
Question styles:
• Why did…?
• What made…?
• What can we infer about…?
Example:
Why was Marilla upset?
✔️ Inference answer:
Marilla was upset because Anne’s mistake showed carelessness and led to embarrassment, suggesting a loss of trust.
4️⃣ Tone & Mood
Question styles:
• What is the tone of the passage?
• How does the writer create humour/tension?
Common tones to teach:
• Humorous
• Critical
• Sympathetic
• Ironic
• Serious
✔️ Always support with a phrase or action from the text.
5️⃣ Outcome / Consequence
Question styles:
• What does this incident show?
• What is suggested about the result of…?
✔️ Link action → lesson → effect
How to Answer Implicit Questions (EXAM STRATEGY)
🔑 The 3-Step Formula
Point → Evidence → Explanation
❌ Weak answer:
Anne is careless.
✅ Strong answer:
Anne appears careless because she fails to check the flavouring, which leads to an embarrassing mistake, showing her lack of attention to detail.
Golden Rules for Students ⚠️
✔️ Use your own words
✔️ Never copy full lines
✔️ Avoid personal opinion (I think)
✔️ Use words like:
• suggests
• implies
• shows
• indicates
Practice Implicit Question (Exam-Style)
What does the incident suggest about Anne’s personality?
📝 Model answer:
The incident suggests that Anne is imaginative but impractical, as her excitement leads her to act without thinking about the consequences.
