Ivory is the hard substance that is collected from the tusks of the elephant.
It is used to make expensive ornaments and many other luxurious items. In the novel ‘’ Heart of Darkness” ivory symbolizes greed for power and wealth.
The Belgian trading company reached Congo on a mission of civilization, but they engaged themselves in collecting ivory through the help of native people; this activity indicated that the white people were forgetting their aim in Congo. They were overshadowed by greed and desire, like them every human being indulged wrong way to get financial and personal benefits.
Mr. Kurtz, an agent of a Belgian trading company, was the highest collector of ivory. Forgetting his mission, he enjoyed the wildlife, and with the touch of wild people and the environment, he became a demon. Greed for wealth exists in every human soul. It is the congenial situation that helps to bring out that greed in human beings.
