This is the tale of a Queens kid rising to become the quintessential voice of New York hardcore, beating cancer once and losing the battle mere months shy of his band's 40th year anniversary.

Lou Koller (born July 15, 1967) grew up in Queens with three brothers, including bandmate Pete. Lou was originally in a band which designed theatre costumes for a lot of classic British performers, before moving into fashion — hardly your average punk cradle to grave tale. Born and bred in classic metal — Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest. His vocals had an enormous power, which of course came from the metalbase.

Sick of It All was started by Lou and Pete in 1986. They nearly named themselves "General Chaos"—then, drummer David Lamb proposed Sick of All. It is interesting to note that the abbreviation S.O.A. had already been utilized by another band, so Lou decided to make it more elaborate. They played their first show at the Right Track Inn a month after forming. The lineup would be locked in — Lou singing, Pete on guitar, Armand Majidi on drums, Craig Setari on bass — until decades later.

The hardcore landmark of their 1989 debut Blood, Sweat and No Tears. Scratch the Surface (1994) 250k copies They have sold half a million records worldwide across 12 albums.

Besides music, Lou had a sleeve tattoo of Dragon Ball Z, co-wrote an autobiography in 2021, and served as tour guide at the Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas. He resided in New Jersey with his wife Melissa and daughter

Lou made his diagnosis public in June 2024: esophageal cancer. Chemo was brutal. He was cancer-free by May 2025. But by September, it returned. Lou had shed 70 pounds by December. Surgery wasn't an option.

On July 24, 2026 SICK OF IT ALL announced the death of Lou Koller. He was 59. CM Punk, Dropkick Murphys, Metallica, Anthrax and more all paid tribute. 2026 was meant to mark 40 years of Sick of It All. Hardcore lost its most recognisable voice, though.

"For his battle is now over and he can finally rest," the band said.

This potentially could be the end of line for LeBron James, the final stop. But perhaps the biggest question is whether his last choice can have one more championship degree?
