As in classic romances, they didn’t like each other in the beginning.
"I didn’t like him," admits Kristine Hermosa, 18. "I thought he wasn’t my type."
"The feeling was mutual," agrees Jericho "Echo" Rosales, 22. "Ayoko rin sa kanya. I thought she was much too young and too immature."
She was barely 16 and he, turning 20 when they were first thrown into constant company as members of the cast of the ABS-CBN soap Munting Paraiso. Both of them belonged to Star Circle Batch 4 but they hardly gravitated toward each other. She was then romantically linked to somebody else (was that you, Marvin Agustin?) and he, to Angelika dela Cruz.
And then they were cast as a romantic pair in the now-top-rated ABS-CBN soap Pangako Sa’yo and in the Star Cinema youth-oriented movie Trip (directed by Gilbert Perez of Kahit Isang Saglit fame, from a screenplay by Enrico Santos who originally called it Ang Huling El Bimbo, intended for the prematurely-retired Jao Mapa and Claudine Barretto).
Before the launching of Pangako came the "breaking news" that Echo was about to be an "unwed father" but it hardly fazed Kristine who was then already getting closer to Echo – and vice-versa – and neither did it affect the ratings of Pangako.
"We started being friends," recalled Echo. "In-between takes, we’d talk about everything and anything, and we soon discovered that we had many things in common, including our being maka-pamilya."
Now, are they or aren’t they? Going steady, that is.
They might be, and they might not be – yet.
But it’s safe to say that, barring any hitch, they’re on the way there.
Sound bites from Echo: "Recently, I jumped for joy. I rushed to an ukay-ukay store and dug up a suit that once belonged to Martin (Nievera). I put it on, dropped by a flower shop, bought a bunch of roses and, on my knees, offered it to Kristine. And then I cried – for joy!"
Yes, Kristine has given Echo "a chance" on the condition that Echo must change some of his ways (unrevealed).
Meanwhile, how compatible are they?
Let’s put Echo and Kristine to a "compatibility" test (see if their answers jibe) and find out how they fare – or if they’ll click as sweethearts.
What is your most treasured possession?
Kristine: My cell phone. I’m helpless without it.
Jericho: It’s not something material. What I value most is my career, my craft.
Biggest fear.
Kristine: Losing my family.
Jericho: Losing my sight. There are a lot more things I want to see. I have a phobia for losing my sight, I don’t know why. I love to scuba-dive and when I’m underwater, lumalabas ang phobia kong ’yan.
Person you admire most.
Kristine: My Mom (Mai Hermosa). She has survived all sorts of trials; marami siyang pinagdaanang hirap.
Jericho: My Nanay Coney (Reyes’) wisdom... Nanay Coney is my mom in the ABS-CBN Saturday afternoon soap Munting Paraiso... My mom’s (Rosario Paclibar) unconditional and undying love for me.
What do you like most about yourself?
Kristine: My being sincere. Yes, I am a sincere person.
Jericho: Madali akong matuto, madali akong pagsabihan. I love doing nice things. I have simple desires; I easily appreciate even the smallest things. Show me a beach at masaya na ako. I’m easy to please.
And what don’t you like most about yourself?
Kristine: ’Yung pagiging totoong tao ko. And my being too trusting. That’s why some people take advantage of me.
Jericho: My being a worrier. When I drink two cups of coffee, I worry na baka mag-palpitate ako.
Your main goal in life?
Kristine: To finish my studies. I only reached third year high school. I really hope to continue my studies and finish a college course.
Jericho: To give my family a good and comfortable life. When I pray, I ask God to use me to do good things for other people. To have more good roles.
Do you believe in God?
Kristine: Of course, I do! God is great! God is good. God is my best friend.
Jericho: God is Pure Love.
Thoughts on love.
Kristine: I take love seriously, that’s why I’m careful about falling in love. Am I in love at the moment? I can’t say yes or no for sure. Mahirap nang magsalita, e.
Jericho: Love is the most wonderful thing that can ever happen to a person. It’s the most powerful feeling.
What can’t you live without?
Kristine: As I’ve said, my cell phone. It’s very helpful during emergencies. It connects me to the rest of the world. In-between takes, I play with it on the set.
Jericho: Happiness. I’m a basically happy person. I try to be happy all the time. What sense is there to life and living if you’re not happy?
If you were a tree, what would you be?
Kristine (Eyes lighting up): A Christmas Tree! It’s bright, trimmed with all the colors, and it’s nice to look at. It also emits a beautiful sound, mga Christmas sound.
Jericho: A coconut tree. I aim high, I think I’m strong.
Food.
Kristine: Seafood, especially crab.
Jericho: A fish. Or a crab. Not easy to eat pero sulit ka, di ba? A fish has bones and it takes a while to crack a crab’s shell, di ba?
Car.
Kristine: Sports car. If ever I get my driver’s license, the first car I want to drive is a sports car.
Jericho: A train. Hindi lang basta car. A train serves a lot of people in one trip. I’d be Bicol Express. (Jericho is a Bicolano. – RFL)
A song.
Kristine: A love song. A romantic song.
Jericho: A love song, like I’ll Be.
A movie.
Kristine: A romantic movie. Actually, any kind of movie because I love watching all kinds of movies. The last one I saw was American’s Sweethearts.
Jericho: Cartoon, an animation, parang Spider Man. I’m a kid at heart. At saka, animated ang isip ko, e. My all-time favorite movie is Matrix. It’s futuristic, well-made and action-packed. And the over-all theme is love.
A book.
Kristine: A religious book. The Bible. But what I’m reading these days is the Harry Potter series. I can hardly wait to watch the movie version (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, first of the series).
Jericho: A dictionary. Everything is there, everything that you want to know.
A hero.
Kristine: I want to have my own identity. Later on, I want to do something "heroic" so people my age will consider me their hero.
Jericho: Lapu-Lapu. Matapang siya, di ba? Hero ba siya?
A cartoon character.
Kristine: Snow White. Ang saya siguro if there are seven dwarfs protecting you and keeping you company, di ba?
Jericho: Spider Man. He’s the cartoon character I really identify with.
A city.
Kristine: City of Angels – Los Angeles! I haven’t been there but it’s a city that I really want to visit. I’ve been reading and hearing a lot about it.
Jericho: Vigan. It’s old, classic. I’m fond of old things, mga antiques.
A piece of jewelry.
Kristine: A ring. It’s endless because it’s round.
Jericho: What’s the cheapest ba? A watch. Or a ring.
A part of the house.
Kristine: My room. I feel free inside my room. I can do anything in my room, pati pag-i-emote.
Jericho: A door. The door provides security, doesn’t it?
A flower.
Kristine: Tulip. Nakasara siya kaya intriguing. Parang shy, di ba?
Jericho: A rose. That’s the flower you give to the one you love, isn’t it?
A saint.
Kristine: St. Michael. He’s the protector saint, di ba?
Jericho: St. Michael The Archangel.
Perfume.
Kristine: Green Tea. Armani White. Fifth Avenue. Gusto ko ’yung subdued ang fragrance.
Jericho: Isemiyaki. Cool Water. ’Yung fresh ang scent.
Fruit.
Kristine: Mango, ripe or green.
Jericho: Citrus forever ako – orange.
If you were to change any part of your body, what would it be?
Kristine: None! I’m happy with every part of my body.
Jericho: ‘Yung mga pangit na ugali ko, such as my being a worrier. But I won’t change any part of my body. Masaya ako sa katawan ko.
If you were President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, what’s the first problem that you would solve?
Kristine: The garbage problem!
Jericho: Utilize the country. Take the population in the city. Di ba over-crowded tayo sa city when there are hectares and hectares of unused lands? Why not make use of those idle lands para ma-spread ang population?
If you were the richest person in the world, what would you do with your money?
Kristine: I’d share it with the poor.
Jericho: I will build schools to upgrade our people’s educational level. I will build factories to provide jobs for the people. I’ll feed the poor and the hungry.
If you had one free day, how would you spend it?
Kristine: I’d pamper myself. I’d go to the mall, I’d go to the gym – I’d enjoy myself! But one day is not enough. Puede bang one week?
Jericho: One day is not enough! I’d spend it at home and tinker with my camera, my computer... I’d fix my clothes, aayusin ko ang cabinet ko. I have a camera and a computer but until now, hindi ko pa sila nagagamit.
If you were not yourself, who would you rather be?
Kristine: I don’t want to be anyone else but myself.
Jericho: Anybody, preferably a simple person. Or a farmer. I want to find out how he looks at life, if he has the same problems as I have.
Smoldering screen heartthrobs Diether Ocampo, Piolo Pascual, Bernard Palanca, Jericho Rosales and Carlos Agassi, collectively known as the Hunks are the current toast of Philippine television. You’ve seen them portray prime roles in local telenovelas and in the movies. You’ve spotted them gyrating and shaking in ASAP and in various live concerts. And now, these five celebrities are invading — believe it or not — the recording scene with their debut album under Star Records.
Their album contains live recording from their filled-to-the-rafters Music Museum concert. It also contains two original cuts, Darating Ka Pala and Natagpuan Ko Na, both penned by Moy Ortiz and Edith Gallardo, the brilliant duo behind the phenomenal Pagdating Ng Panahon by Aiza Seguerra.
The Hunks craze has also moved on to the fashion scene ABS-CBN Consumer Products, Inc. has decided to release the Hunks Collection (a collection of colored shirts, feminine tops, sports socks, silver accessories and eyewear). They also have a calendar featuring exclusive, never-before-seen photographs of the "delicious" five.
The following is a conversation I had with them as they talked about being invisible, Bin laden and their favorite body parts. Read on.
Boy Abunda (BA): Love — if it has a tag price — how much would that be?
Diether Ocampo (DO): Priceless!
Jericho Rosales (JR): Yeah man. I have to agree with you on that. It’s priceless.
Piolo Pascual (PP): Love is something you feel and could never ever buy.
Bernard Palanca (BP): Love is priceless.
Carlos Agassi (CA): Love makes the world go round. It makes you go out of your way to make someone feel special. You could never put a tag price on it.
BA: Your house is burning. What is the first thing that you’ll save?
DO: Myself!
JR: The people inside.
PP: I’ll be in shock when that happens! He he! But honestly, I wouldn’t know. I’ll try to save my family first then whatever I can see that I could still save.
BP: Myself first!
CA: My brother... my family!
BA: If you were to be invisible for a day, what would you do?
DO: Hang out in the ladies’ bathroom.
JR: I’ll guard the woman I love and protect her. I’ll stay with her the whole day.
PP: I’ll visit Malacañang and see for myself what the government is doing to save the economy. Also, I’ll take a flight wherever so by the time I’m already visible, nobody would know where I am and my plane ride was free!
BP: I’ll just stay in one place and feel invisible.
CA: Puro kalokohan ang gagawin ko! I’ll fulfill all my adolescent dreams — you know, go to places where I’m forbidden to enter! He he he! I’d also try to look for Bin Laden, capture him and get the reward for myself.
BA: Do you think you’ll go to heaven or hell?
DO: I’ll go to heaven. Why not?
JR: Heaven. I wanna meet God.
PP: Only the Lord knows but who wouldn’t want to go to Heaven? Of course I’d like to think I’m going to Heaven. I think I’ve been good and I think I’ve been abiding by the norms of my religion.
BP: With Rica (Peralejo), I’m already in heaven.
CA: Hopefully, heaven. I try to be as good as possible and I always try to follow the law. But I’m not perfect.
BA: If you were to spend a day with a historical figure or a living legend, who would you want to be and why?
DO: Fernando Poe Jr. I’d like to get to know him better and learn how he maintains his nature as the King of Philippine Movies.
JR: Doris Day. I like her music and I’m curious how it was to be a star during her time. I’d also like to talk to her about her music.
PP: I’ve always wanted to meet Jose Rizal. Why? Because he is famous and a lot of people idolize him. I would like to know what brought him to write the Noli Me Tangere and the El Filibusterismo. I’d also like to ask how was it to live during the Spanish times.
BP: I would like to meet Jim Morrison. He just had the biggest mind and widest imaginatioon. He’s also one of the smartest people who ever lived.
CA: Elvis Presley. I’d like to ask him if he really died. You know, solve the mystery once and for all.
BA: If you were to be a woman, who would you want to be and why?
DO: Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Who wouldn’t want to be a President?
JR: Ako pa rin. I’d like to see myself as a woman.
PP: Mother Teresa. I’ve always admired her for having such a great heart and for always helping the poor. I want to have the same bravery and energy she had helping and spreading kindness and goodwill.
BP: My mom. She’s the reason why I am who I am. She’s also the strongest woman I’ve ever met.
CA: I’d also like to be my mom. If not for her, I wouldn’t be here. She’s the perfect role model and she’s a great mom.
BA: Complete the sentence. Life is like...
DO: ... A wheel. Sometimes you’re up, sometimes you’re down.
JR: ... A river. It has highs and lows. It’s also never ending and it always has its own way.
PP: ... a box full of chocolates. You’ll never know what you’re gonna get. He he he!
CA: ... a wheel. Everything comes back to you for a reason that’s why you always have to do good.
BA: Sexiest woman on Earth.
DO: Estella Warren.
JR: The woman I love, Kristine Hermosa.
PP: At present, Julia Roberts. But I also find Winona Ryder sexy.
BP: Of course, Rica!
CA: Britney Spears.
BA: If you were to be hostaged by terrorists, how much ransom would you be you worth?
DO: Worthless! He he he!
JR: I don’t know my value but I hope the terrorists would give justice to my worth because a lot of people care for me.
PP: I’d just let them kill me. I’m not worth any ransom. I’ll just pray for them and hope that they will be captured and punished.
BP: I’ll just tell them to kill me.
CA: I’ll let my family give everything just to let me go!
BA: If you can have the mind of someone else, whose mind would you choose?
DO: Kris Aquino.
JR: Albert Einstein.
PP: Bin Laden. I’ll try to unscrew his brain so he’d stop doing terrorist attacks! Or maybe if I have his mind, I can brainwash it!
BP: Jim Morrison!
CA: Bill Gates! I think he’s the smartest living guy in the world.
BA: What are the three words your mom would describe you?
DO: Matigas ang ulo! three words yun’ ha!
JR: Loving, faithful and simple
PP: Cute, makulit and mabait. He he!
BP: Pain-in-the-butt, a headache but she can’t live without me?
CA: Makulit, malambing and unique.
BA: What are the three things you can’t leave the house without?
NEXT SUPERSTARS NG DOS SINA JERICHO AT KRISTINE November 2000
Impressive ito at parang pelikula na ang dating in terms of scope and magnitude.
Si Kristine naman ay considered to be one of the most beautiful faces in showbiz today at dahil dito ay bet siya ng Dos for stardom.
After the teleserye, handa na sila to go big time lalo na sa movies.
But that is beside the point.
There's a new love team in the 'biz. And they seem to be paired on pretty well. I'm talking about Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa. These two are great together. They both possess a certain charm and wit that's why people accepted their team-up right away. Fans say that they look good together and we think so, too.
Here's a brief interview with Jericho and Kristine regarding their relationship on and off screen.
JERICHO: I think all love teams are being linked together. People see us often and they think there is something going on. At this point, our relationship is purely friendship and work-related lead to something more than friendship because it's not impossible.
KRISTINE: Maybe because we're a love team that's why we're being linked together. We can't avoid that. For me being linked together means we're effective partners. We are able to get interested in our love team at marami kaming napapakilig. Though in real life, we're very close now as compared before. We're starting to enjoy our friendship.
Why did you think people found you compatible as partners?
JERICHO: I think because of our chemistry. I think our loveteam started when Kristine guested in Munting Paraiso. She played the role of my girlfriend but we had to part ways because her family had to move to another place. Malou Santos saw the chemistry and she made Kristine a mainstay. So that’s it...
KRISTINE: Like Jericho said, our team-up worked well in Ang Munting Paraiso. Then, he guested in my Star Drama which turned out to be a high-rating episode. Tapos ruby-ruby na sa FLAMES. Now he’s a semi-regular of Richard Loves Lucy and he’ll be my partner there. We are compatible as acting partners because we already proved it.
Do you consider yourself as a famous on-screen partner? Why?
JERICHO: On TV, in a way yes. We are still starting and we hope to duplicate our popularity in movies also.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a celebrity?
KRISTINE: The advantages are we are able to entertain a lot of people and give them joy. Being a celebritries, we have the privilege to work with different people. It’s profitable and fun. The disadvantage I think is that we live like a fish in an aquarium, lahat ng ginagawa mo, pinapanood ng mga tao. We are sometimes victimized by character assassination. There is always a misconception about us. Fans easily believe whatever they read in newspapers and magazines. They expect a lot from us not realizing we are also human and prone to making foolish mistakes. I hate being linked to different guys like the issue with me and DJ Mo and also with Marvin Agustin. I hate it because it’s not true.
Jericho, have you totally recovered from being identified as Angelika’s original love team mate.
JERICHO: Slowly yes. The fact that people accepted my team-up with Kristine only meant that I already left Angelika’s shadow. She’s in another station now and I am with ABS so there’s no chance of us being together at work anymore.
Kristine, you’re considered to be one of the most promising young actresses, has your looks and being a talent of ABS-CBN helped you a lot?
KRISTINE: My looks is an advantage they say. But I don’t want to just have the looks. You have to have talent also. In the end, yun pa rin ang mangingibabaw. Being an ABS-CBN talent is really a big help. It’s giving me good beaks considering that they are the largest network. It’s a good venue not only for me but for all the stars of ABS.
Dream movie with Kristine/Jericho?
JERICHO: A heart-warming love story na tatatak sa isip ng mga tao just like Titanic.
KRISTINE: Jericho is a very good actor so love story na may pagka-heavy drama.
Big breaks in terms of your acting skills?
JERICHO: It was Maalala Mo Kaya’s Pampang episode with Dante Rivero for me in 1998 which won for me the Star Awards Best Single Performance by an Actor and as Best New Promising Male Star. Du'n nila nakita yung acting ko it really helped me a lot.
KRISTINE: Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako. I developed my acting here because I played a much mature role. I learned to cry most of the time in this series. It was a good break because I was able to prove to myself my worth as an actress.
What can you say about Jericho/Kristine?
JERICHO: Except from the fact that she’s one of the most beautiful actresses we have right now, not everybody knows that Tin is a very sweet and nice girl. She’s sensitive and childish sometimes. Maybe because she’s only sixteen. Contrary to their impression about linking her to some other guys, she’s conservative. I like her because she’s a good friend.
KRISTINE: Ekong is a nice guy naman. I admire him as a good actor. Makulit lang siya in a way na laging nang-aasarsa telepono at laging nanghihiram ng charger ng cellphone kasi lagi niyang nakakalimutan. We don’t like each other before but now we both agree on a lot of things and we get along very well.
If there would be one thing that would end your partnership, what would it be and why?
JERICHO: If we don’t feel working with each other anymore. If that would be the case then we won’t effective anymore. Our loveteam per se is not permanent. This is not true only for us but for all loveteams as well. There will always come a time when we have to grow and move on as individual actor and actress.
KRISTINE: If we are not effective anymore as partners. Eventually we will part ways, as a loveteam. We have to mature as an artist. I think that's it.

The Echo of Kristine's heart
November 2001

And what don’t you like most about yourself?

Jericho: Happiness. I’m a basically happy person. I try to be happy all the time. What sense is there to life and living if you’re not happy?
If you were a tree, what would you be?
Kristine (Eyes lighting up): A Christmas Tree! It’s bright, trimmed with all the colors, and it’s nice to look at. It also emits a beautiful sound, mga Christmas sound.

The Singing Hunks
December 2001
DO: Cellphone, watch and toothbrush.
JR: Wallet, extra shirt and toothbrush
PP: My car, my wallet and my sanity!

NEXT SUPERSTARS NG DOS SINA JERICHO AT KRISTINE
November 2000
Impressive ito at parang pelikula na ang dating in terms of scope and magnitude.
Si Kristine naman ay considered to be one of the most beautiful faces in showbiz today at dahil dito ay bet siya ng Dos for stardom.
After the teleserye, handa na sila to go big time lalo na sa movies.
But that is beside the point.

BUDDY BODIES
October 2000
