In this excerpt from Risālah Ibn Abī Zayd al-Qayrawānī: Lesson 9 — The Mālikī Adhān, Iqāmah, and Prayer, Dr. Abdullah bin Hamid Ali explains why Mālikīs begin Al-Fātiḥah with “Al-ḥamdu lillāhi Rabb al-ʿālamīn” rather than the basmala.

Dr. Abdullah examines the hadith evidence, ʿamal ahl al-Madīnah (the practice of the people of Madinah), and the Qur’anic appearance of the basmala in the account of Prophet Sulaymān and the Queen of Sheba (27:30). He then explores the significant disagreement between the Mālikī and Shāfiʿī schools—including Ibn al-ʿArabī al-Mālikī’s sharp criticism of Imam al-Shāfiʿī’s position.
