Here's another photo found at the Dempsay highland Airfield during the day when I recorded the C-54 video here : We Finally Got Access to These Historic WWII Warbirds
https://youtu.be/8MsJyqkuAe0

This airframe carries a remarkable history and a very tragic and sad history. I believe this photo was most likely captured by Bill himself as there are several of these mixed in the bunch. Read the whole story. It's interesting.

Built in 1944 as a Douglas C-47 Skytrain, this aircraft first flew in World War II as U.S. Army Air Forces serial 43-15709—supporting Allied operations across North Africa and later the China-Burma-India theater.

When the war ended, its story didn’t.

Instead of being scrapped, it became an airliner—flying passengers across the Middle East and Africa under names like “Al Jamia” and “The Cedar.” Over the decades, it served multiple airlines and even governments, quietly connecting remote parts of the world.

In the 1980s, it returned to military service—this time with the South African Air Force.

Then came something remarkable…

Rather than retiring, it was reborn.

Converted into a modern turboprop DC-3, it entered a new era of flight—eventually making its way to the United States as N145RD, flying with Baja Air.

👉 This photo captures that moment in time.

A World War II aircraft… still flying… still working… decades later.

But its mission wasn’t over yet.

In its final chapter, re-registered as N467KS, it was used for humanitarian missions, delivering aid to remote regions in Africa—helping people in places few aircraft could reach.

After more than 75 years of service, its journey came to an end in 2019. During a test flight after the engines were once again upgraded, one engine failed and the prop only partially feathered. The plane crashed, both pilots lost their lives and the airframe was a total loss.

From war…
to peace…
to saving lives…

This aircraft didn’t just fly.

It served the world.

If you know the DC-3… you know this is one of the greatest aircraft ever built.

Hello, everyone now that the full Dempsay Highland Airfield video is out, link here: https://youtu.be/8MsJyqkuAe0 I wanted to share something very neat that happened behind the scenes. We found a huge stack of photographs in the hanger office. I believe these to be taken sometime around 2000-2006, but don't quote me. There are a great number of photos here that I am so grateful to have on loan to be able to scan and preserve them. I've been scanning them in as I go, because it's time consuming, but I think they're worth preserving. If you'd like to see more, I need to know that you want to see more. Please comment on this post to let me know. There are even several photos of Bill Dempsay working on his aircraft with his maintenance crews. I mean there are probably several hundred photos here to sort through.

We are considering a new concept for the channel. A viewer's submission playlist. Viewers are welcomed to submit aviation related video content, to be shared on the channel with everyone. Is this something you'd enjoy seeing? So far I have a submission of a viewers experience of taking a flight on the B-17 Sentimental Journey. Do you want to see the content? Do you like this idea?

Let's vote on the photos here, which one is your favorite and which one do you want to see more video exploring?

I know some viewers have been waiting a long time for the tour video of the boneyard where the C-47 was pulled from. I'll be spending some time there gathering video for that episode over the next couple of weeks. Just made a visit over the last weekend, and I plan on returning a few more times to get some good content for those who are interested in seeing more detail and more first person views from the farm.
