Drawing Tip of the Day: Toss in an unexpected element to liven things up. For example, the cake is stacked vertically. The fairies who are on each others' shoulders create another vertical line. It's that one troublemaker (!) coming in at a diagonal who adds extra energy to the picture.

When attempting to draw a "cute" character, many beginners will aim for a single type - the adorable personality. But there are a wide variety of sub-types. For example, for cute characters there are:
-Cheerful types
-Gullible types
-Excitable types
-Confused types
-Sensitive types
...and more! Try to think past the obvious to give your character dimension. Or combine them. Below is my example of monster-cute! I hope that was helpful.

"Drawing Shape by Shape Animals" (below) is one of my most popular books, which sold over 100,000 copies. So you might wonder if it's even possible to come up with a sequel. It would have to be cute, so cute, in fact, that my editors would probably beg me not to pack so much adorableness into a single volume - which they did! But I had no mercy! It's coming out at the beginning of summer, and it's called, "Drawing Shape by Shape CUTE Animals." Keep your eyes out for it. And brace yourself.

You need big dreams to come up with small characters! Have you ever tried to draw in the fantasy genre?

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DRAWING STYLE?
It's a good thing for an artist to ponder. If you can articulate your strengths, you can make them stronger.
One of mine, I believe, is creating characters that not only look cute, but "feel" cute to the viewer. How about you? What do you think yours is?
