From my book, "Figure It Out: Faces and Expressions," notice the easy proportions: the top of the ear is at the the same level as the eyebrow, and the bottom of the ear is at the same level as the bottom of the nose. SIMPLE!

Sketching with a purpose. I find that sketching from a mental concept produces better results, and is ultimately more satisfying, than allowing your pencil to just wander along the page. How about you? What process works best for your artwork?

What's going on in the first step? You're not defining the character yet but establishing the proportions, like the giant head, medium torso, and short legs. This is like designing the foundation of a house. Once it's in place, you can add the details.
