From my book, "Figure It Out: Faces and Expressions," notice the easy proportions: the top of the ear is at the the same level as the eyebrow, and the bottom of the ear is at the same level as the bottom of the nose. SIMPLE!

What's going on in the first step? You're not defining the character yet but establishing the proportions, like the giant head, medium torso, and short legs. This is like designing the foundation of a house. Once it's in place, you can add the details.
