The xenophobic protests targeting Nigerians in Ghana are deeply troubling, striking at the core of Pan-Africanism and undermining the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah, a key advocate for African unity. On July 29, 2025, these protests erupted in Accra, with demonstrators demanding the removal of Nigerians from Ghana, accusing them—without credible evidence—of crimes such as ritual killings, prostitution, and dominating the economy. These accusations are not only unfounded but dangerously misleading, overlooking the significant contributions Nigerians make to Ghana’s development. More than a million Nigerians live legally in Ghana, playing vital roles in industries like education and telecommunications.
This wave of hostility, largely fueled by economic anxieties and resentment toward Nigerian success, threatens to unravel years of regional cooperation under ECOWAS. It also brings back painful memories of events like the 1983 “Ghana Must Go” crisis. Unlike that episode, however, the current unrest stems from grassroots aggression rather than official government policy, which makes the situation even more alarming. In response, Ghanaian and Nigerian officials, including ministers Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Bianca Odumegwu-Okujwu, met on July 30, 2025, to de-escalate tensions and reinforce their countries’ longstanding relationship. The Nigerian Senate also condemned the protests, describing them as a betrayal of African solidarity and urging all parties to uphold ECOWAS agreements.
Blaming Nigerians for Ghana’s economic challenges is a simplistic and harmful distraction. If crime is truly the concern, the appropriate response would be to strengthen law enforcement, not vilify an entire nationality. Such actions jeopardize the vision behind the African Continental Free Trade Area and betray the dreams of unity that Nkrumah held dear. Ghana and Nigeria must reject this divisive rhetoric and work together to honor their shared past and build a stronger, united future.
