I am tired of these incessant and futile controversies. Some people seem to get excited over trifles. I am annoyed by those who make hasty judgments. Some might think that because I smile and have fun, I'm not serious. Sure, my vision may be different, but I always strive to follow the guidelines given to me.
At 37, I just try to make the most of every moment. When I was asked to participate in the Laver Cup, I was honored. With my current ranking, outside the top 100 at this age, I even thought it was a joke. But I take this opportunity very seriously, for the event, for my team and especially for me. Traveling to Vancouver and leaving my family again is not the easiest thing. But, despite everything, I continue to practice my profession with passion and sincerity, as I have always done. And, without tongue in cheek, I must admit that I am very well paid for this and that the conditions are exceptional.
I know, some will say that I have accomplished nothing, that I am a clown... But the truth is that I am happy and fulfilled. I want to say that the Laver Cup is a fantastic event, and I plan to make the most of the end of my weekend. Let’s go Team Europe, let’s catch up Team World 💪🏾!
🇦🇷 20-years old Juan Martín del Potro WINS the US Open, ends Roger Federer’s 5-consecutive title streak, in a 5-set THRILLER!
Even at one set down, and then two sets to one down (at one point being just *2* points away from the loss), Delpo never gave up, fought until the end, and took the crown! 🇺🇸
It would be the only Major in his injury-riddled career, but what a win it was! 👏🏆
Maria Sakkari was asked if she trusts the doping authorities after the decision in Simona Halep case:
“One thing I can tell you for sure is the way they’re handling every situation with any player, any athlete, it’s just scary. We’re gonna get to a point where we’re not even gonna be taking electrolytes. Thankfully, I haven’t been in that position. I never want to be.. I’ve been very careful with everything that has to do with supplements. But I don’t know what the process is, how things are done behind closed doors. I don’t know who has a say. I have no idea.. I would for sure improve the whereabouts app that the anti-doping app. It doesn’t work well. It’s supposed to remind you every day of your time slot & it doesn’t. They tried to improve it, but it’s not working very well. For us, we travel so much compared to other athletes. It’s just very stressful. I wake up almost every night to use the bathroom. If that’s close to my time slot, I’m just thinking ‘Do I go? Do I not go? Do I just wait if they come?’ It’s just very stressful.”
🇷🇴 Statement from Simona Halep, who cannot return to the tour until October 2026:
- Says she’s ‘shocked’ and ‘disappointed’, and has refused to accept the decision
- “ABP charge only after its expert group learned my identity, causing two out of three to suddenly change their opinion in favor of ITIA’s allegations. The ITIA relied solely on the opinions of these experts who looked only at my blood parameters—which I’ve maintained for more than 10 years in the same range. This group ignored the fact no prohibited substance has ever been found in my blood or urine samples with the sole exception of one August 29 positive test for roxadustat, which was present at an extremely low level and which, when considering my negative test three days prior, could only have been caused by accidental exposure to Roxadustat.” @WTA
On this day 9 years ago, the 2014 Men’s US Open Semi-Finals took place. One of the THOSE Tennis days you never forget.
- Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, the top two players in the world, were on a collision course for yet another final facing each other, after a five set thriller at Wimbledon.
- First up was Novak Djokovic against Kei Nishikori. Kei had only made the quarter-final of a Major once, and never made a semi-final, skipping both Canada and Cincinnati that year.
- HOWEVER, Nishikori flipped the script, and beat Novak on a very hot Friday afternoon in New York, out clutching the Serbian, becoming the first Asian man to reach a Major Final. What a win it was, *however*, Roger Federer was seemingly lurking in the final, expected to win his match after this shocking result.
- After Novak’s shocking loss, Fed fans were understandably overjoyed. The path was clear. Next up was Roger Federer against Marin Cilic. He had a 5-0 H2H Vs the Croatian, and had beaten him just three weeks before.
- BUT, Cilic had other ideas, fired down 13 aces, won 87% of his first serve points, and simply OUTPLAYED Roger, beating him in straight sets.
- These results produced one of the most random Major Finals in the Big 3 Era: Marin Cilic Vs Kei Nishikori.
- Marin Cilic won the final, another straight sets victory, beating Nishikori in Kei’s only Major final.
Three years ago today, during the 2020 US Open and one of the strangest years in modern times, probably one of the craziest TENNIS situations occurred.
What’s also crazy is how close it was to not happening at ALL.
Overwhelming title favourite Novak Djokovic became the subject of Tennis’s 3rd match *default* in a Major event, after he accidentally hit a lineswoman in the throat with a tennis ball, during an undoubtedly regrettable moment of (understandable) frustration.
What makes it even crazier was the score situation, it NEARLY never happened:
- Djokovic was up 0-40 on Carreno Busta’s serve at *4-5 in the first set, with Pablo hitting an incredible forehand winner to save one of the set points which was ONE MILIMETRE IN (shown in the first pic)!
- If Pablo misses that forehand, Djokovic wins the set 6-4 and almost certainly wins the match, having a 2-0 H2H previously with PCB.
- Instead, Pablo saves all three set points, and breaks Novak’s serve for *6-5 in the first set, leading to Djokovic’s frustration, and his subsequent default
One of those ‘what the hell just happened?’ Tennis moments.
