Karen Savage, a 63-year-old arts teacher at Barrington Middle School in Florida, has been fired after she hung a Black baby doll by its neck from a flat-screen television in front of her students.

When students confronted her about the disturbing act, Savage reportedly laughed and claimed she did it "to get their attention."

A 14-year-old Black student recorded the incident on video. His mother, Nina Williams, posted the footage online, where it quickly went viral. The mother did not hold back, writing:

“This is not a classroom management tool. This is straight up hate and trauma being weaponized in front of our children in a place where they are supposed to be safe.”

Savage was fired on Wednesday following an internal investigation. The student’s mother is now considering legal action against the Hillsborough County Schools District.

This is yet another painful example of how anti-Black racism continues to show up in spaces that are supposed to nurture and protect Black children. Hanging a Black baby doll by the neck is not a “joke” or a “teaching tool” — it is a deeply traumatic and hateful act.

The fact that a teacher felt comfortable enough to do this in front of her students speaks volumes about the environment Black children are still forced to navigate in many schools.
