Johar Jharkhand!
Happy Jharkhand Foundation Day! 💗
Sharing a tiny piece of a huge heritage — JADOPATIA, one of Jharkhand’s most powerful yet fading folk artforms.
This little painting you see here has a simple story:
An elephant surrounded by forest vines.
Why? Because elephant is my favourite animal, and it is also the state animal of Jharkhand🐘 And the vines represent the forests that breathe life into this land , the soul of Jharkhand🌸
But beyond my personal story, this artwork carries a bigger message!
A message about an artform that once carried songs, stories, and emotions, but now struggles to survive.
ABOUT JADOPATIA:
Jadopatia is a tribal scroll-painting tradition of the Santal community of Jharkhand.
The word comes from “Jado” meaning magic or healing and “Pati” meaning scroll.
These artists are called Jadopatias, used to travel from village to village carrying long painted scrolls.
But they didn’t sell them, they sang them!
Yes! The artwork was the story, and the story was the healing.
Their paintings were used to narrate myths, afterlife journeys, community memories, and even to comfort grieving families.
Every colour, every symbol, every border had meaning.
Today, very few Jadopatia families continue this tradition.
With modernisation and lack of recognition, this beautiful storytelling art is slowly disappearing.
But folk art is not “old art”!
It is our cultural identity, our heritage, our collective memory!
As an artist, I feel a responsibility to bring these lost forms back into everyday conversation.
If you’re reading this, take a moment to explore, share, or simply appreciate India’s incredible folk heritage.
Because art survives only when people remember💗
My Small Tribute:
This mini Jadopatia-inspired elephant is my way of celebrating Jharkhand,
its wildlife, its forests, its stories, and its soul.
A tiny painting, but a big love letter to my state 💚
