"Superman" (2025) vs. Zack Snyder's Trilogy: A Tale of Two Visions

I watched the new Superman movie twice to form a solid opinion. The first viewing left me underwhelmed, but on the second watch, perhaps because my expectations had significantly lowered—or rather, adjusted—I experienced the film differently.
The movie, directed by 58-year-old James Gunn—known for his Guardians of the Galaxy films—is a precise embodiment of Superman as traditional comic book fans know him. It features the familiar Superman suit, his Fortress of Solitude in the Arctic, his robot assistants, his dog Krypto, his super-powered cousin, his classic nemesis Lex Luthor, his journalist love interest Lois Lane, the staff of The Daily Planet where he works as Clark Kent, his boss Perry, his colleague Jimmy Olsen, and his adoptive parents in Kansas who found him as a baby after his spaceship landed on their farm, arriving from Krypton. Gunn meticulously preserved dozens of these details, aiming to appeal to a broad segment of original DC comic book enthusiasts.
I couldn't help but compare James Gunn's project with that of 59-year-old Zack Snyder, who presented Superman in three films: Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Justice League (2017)—the latter of which he re-released an extended, four-hour cut titled Zack Snyder's Justice League in 2021. Snyder's approach blends the enjoyment of superhero films with a deep philosophical, intellectual, and humanistic tone, raising questions about being, existence, justice, power, omniscient knowledge, whether we are alone in the universe, and the "transcendent, god-like" nature of Superman.
I've watched Snyder's three films dozens of times, without exaggeration, and each time I feel the same enjoyment without any boredom. In fact, I discover deeper layers in the trilogy's story and its cinematic details, thoroughly enjoying the masterful soundtrack (by the legendary Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, and Junkie XL).
I don't believe I'll do the same with the 2025 version of Superman. It's a popcorn movie par excellence, enjoyable enough for a single viewing—or in my case, two—without feeling the need for more time to digest broader details or deeper layers.
The film's main conflict revolves around Superman's intervention to deter the US-allied nation of "Boravia" from invading neighboring "Jarahanpur" and preventing an impending massacre. Simultaneously, his traditional rival, tech mogul Lex Luthor, attempts to eliminate him permanently by trapping him in a Pocket Universe parallel to ours, turning public opinion against him and portraying him as an oppressive alien overlord. The story also features two teams of superheroes, one working with Superman and the other with Lex Luthor.
In my opinion, there's no comparison between the cast's performance in Superman (2025) and Snyder's trilogy. Starting with David Corenswet in the new film versus Henry Cavill's performance in Zack Snyder's trilogy, Cavill delivered a blend of Superman's human nature and his transcendent superhero essence. He loves and hates, gets angry, seeks revenge, rebels, shouts, wins, loses, and ultimately, "bleeds."
Jesse Eisenberg's portrayal of Lex Luthor is unforgettable, with a deep background story. He speaks of his father, who grew up in Eastern Europe during the era of dictators and world wars, leading the younger Lex to fear Superman transforming into an alien tyrant. Thus, he believes a deterrent weapon is necessary for him and other Meta-Humans. This kind of deep explanation of character motivations is sorely lacking in the new film.
The same applies to Amy Adams's performance as Lois Lane and Laurence Fishburne as Perry. Even Jimmy Olsen—the famous Daily Planet photographer—was used differently by Zack Snyder, transformed into an undercover CIA agent who is killed early in one of the trilogy's films.
In Zack Snyder's films, a team of Justice League superheroes, including Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Flash, are introduced with rich and engaging explanations of their backgrounds and prior stories before joining Superman. For example, we track Bruce Wayne's hatred for Superman and Clark Kent's hatred for Batman—built on deep reasons presented in the film series—and their bloody confrontations, before they eventually become allies against the alien foe Darkseid and form the Justice League.
In contrast, the new film features a group of heroes like Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific who appear flat, without any in-depth exploration of their history or the formation of their alliance.
In conclusion, Zack Snyder built a complete Superman universe founded on ideas, emotions, philosophy, and deep introspection—a multi-layered world that demands multiple viewings. James Gunn, on the other hand, created an entertaining world rooted in Pop Culture comic book aesthetics, with stunning cinematography, strong action sequences, a straightforward, light story, and an unmistakable sense of humor. Therefore, one cannot burden Gunn's film with more than it intends to be or expect things the director doesn't aim to deliver to viewers who want to enjoy Superman as they know him—the pre-Snyder era. This is, incidentally, what was said when comparing Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy with Zack Snyder's portrayal of Batman, and comparing the Joker presented by the late legend Heath Ledger with Jared Leto's later Joker.
Each director has their own school of thought, ideas, and even eccentricities and philosophies, some of which we will agree with and others we will not. But that doesn't prevent us from enjoying everything presented and engaging in discussions about what we watch. In my opinion, this is the importance of cinema and arts in general: to create broad spaces for ideas and opinions to intertwine and produce more and more creativity.
The Superman film has grossed $407 million at the global box office so far, while Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice alone grossed $873 million during its run. ❤️🎬

Bryan Cranston Halts Filming of "Lone Wolf" Amidst Unpaid Wages :
Actor Bryan Cranston reportedly ceased filming the final scenes of "Lone Wolf" after discovering that the producers had stopped paying the crew and fellow actors.
Cranston stated, "In full transparency, I was paid in full for my role in this film even before the last temporary work stoppage – so I was surprised to learn that most of the crew, to my knowledge, had not received their last two weeks of pay, nor had the co-starring actors."

𝐌𝐲 𝐒𝐨𝐧 (2021) is a uniquely immersive and emotionally raw thriller that throws the audience directly into the desperate search of a father, Edmond Murray, whose seven-year-old son goes missing during a summer camp. What sets this film apart is that the lead actor, James McAvoy, was not given a script and had to react in real-time to the unfolding events and information presented to his character. This unconventional approach creates a palpable sense of urgency and authenticity as Edmond navigates a parent's worst nightmare, grappling with fear, suspicion, and the relentless drive to find his child. Prepare to be deeply invested in Edmond's visceral and unpredictable journey through a landscape of uncertainty and mounting desperation.

This gripping film offers a powerful and unfiltered portrayal of parental anguish and the primal instinct to protect one's child. McAvoy's performance, fueled by genuine surprise and emotion, draws you into the heart of Edmond's frantic search, making you feel his frustration, his hope, and his despair. As the mystery of his son's disappearance deepens, the film explores themes of trust, the fragility of security, and the lengths a parent will go to for their family.

Have you ever imagined the unimaginable pain of a missing child, and what emotions does that thought evoke? This film taps into that primal fear in a truly unique and impactful way.

You can stream "My Son" on Netflix. You can also find it on Showmax. It is also available on Roku and Amazon Prime Video.

Manchester by the Sea
What is pain? It's not the kind that gnaws at the body, but the one that subtly infiltrates the soul, silently weakening it, and erasing the very essence of life from within.
It is a malady without a cure.
In this poignant journey, we accompany Lee, a man who, though still living, has effectively passed away from the world. The grief and anguish within him are palpable, squeezing his very being, and he laments that no amount of tears can extinguish the burning heat of his sorrow.
When Al-Sharif Al-Radi wrote to his mother, he expressed:
"The separation of strangers after fondness is arduous, so how much more so for me, when you are my life's hope, my sole desire, and the closest person to my heart?"
He then likened life to a journey that offers nothing but toil.
The film's screenplay was remarkably realistic and deeply moving, depicting life as a spirit burdened by emptiness, void, and a pervasive sense of futility. Director Kenneth Lonergan masterfully structured life into two distinct acts:

* Act One: Illustrates the serene progression of life before the onset of loss.

* Act Two: Portrays the subsequent psychological turmoil, the grip of fear, and the intense yearning that arises when loved ones are taken away.
Oscar winner Casey Affleck delivered one of the most compelling and heart-wrenching dramatic performances. He embodied the character in a state of profound, albeit partial, emotional collapse, using a powerful, almost rhetorical style to offer a vivid and raw portrayal of what enduring pain can truly do to a human spirit.

Of course, anyone who has watched the Avengers movies knows the iconic character Iron Man, who had three full movies as the opening for the series that spanned 11 consecutive years!
In one of the installments, Iron Man was hunting down a notorious criminal who terrorized the world, a dangerous terrorist named the Mandarin.
This Mandarin had terrifying videos, with professional cinematic direction, amazing special effects, and frightening threats and promises of doom. He also orchestrated bloody terrorist operations!
The superhero Iron Man managed to reach the Mandarin's lair and went in to apprehend him, but a stunning surprise awaited him!
The incredibly dangerous and terrifying Mandarin turned out to be just an obscure, failed stage actor!
A very silly and utterly trivial actor, incapable of uttering a coherent sentence, surrounded by beautiful women, drowning in alcohol, watching a replay of a soccer match, completely unaware or unconcerned by the threat and the superhero's fiery weapons pointed at his head!!
The supporting hero asks the main hero with strong disbelief, "This is the Mandarin?!?!?!"
As for the real terrorist, the one who created the Mandarin, he was an influential figure in weapons and politics, who brought this trivial puppet and made him a terrifying face that made bodies tremble at the sound of his dreadful name!
The name... Mandarin!!!
Of course, the heroes do not care about this superficial simpleton and wage a fierce war against the real terrorist criminal who employs the terrorists and makes them a facade and a face to provide him with reasons to continue his crimes and ignite war!!
All of this is the plot of a nice fantasy action movie for the 13+ age group, which you can stay up late to watch on a holiday with your children after the exam season!
However, if you see it as reflecting reality or resembling real people or events, that is your personal opinion, my believing citizen friend, and you alone are responsible for it!!!

"Actor Sean Penn:
'Tom Cruise is currently the best risk-taker and executor of dangerous stunts.'
He jokingly added, 'But don't tell Keanu Reeves and his director Chad Stahelski.'
Sean considered Cruise to be a man who strives for excellence at the highest level, an excellent actor, and an incredibly exceptional craftsman.
He added: 'Those films are not made at that level without an exceptional person behind them.
And Cruise is the common denominator in all of them. That's no coincidence.'"
